Story

Quote:
The San Ramon couple who left their young boys alone while they spent five days in Las Vegas pleaded no contest Thursday to the charges against them, a move that spares them from prison but will require them to be confined to their home.

Their surprise pleas -- essentially the same as pleading guilty -- brought a sudden end to a case made all the more stunning by the fact that Jacob Calero and Michelle De La Vega managed to find a dog-sitter to care for their two puppies.

...

The couple left for five days in Las Vegas on Dec. 30, leaving Joshua and Jason, who is mildly autistic, home alone with Calero's cell phone number, a stack of frozen dinners and strict instructions not to answer the door.

Could the kids not open a can of food for the dogs once in a while when they nuked their own meals?

I think the point to having a pet sitter is that the kids can (probably) be counted on not to **** on the carpet.

There's a lot of discussion about this case at the moment. Lots of pundits and self-proclaimed experts talking about where the line is (latchkey kids are probably okay; autistic pre-schoolers left in the care of a 10-year-old for five days probably not so okay).
