Perhaps better suited to forum=5 but 'meh'.

Many moons ago I asked for some good fantasy type books. DSD pointed me in the direction of Game of Thrones. I enjoyed it. 3-4 months later I read the sequel Clash of Kings. Not bad books. So another 3-4 months later I pick up Sword of Storms. Just slowly working my way through the series.

This morning I was reading the book and it got to the point where I just closed it. I completely detest the book. This is only the second time out of the hundreds of books that I have read that I have refused to finish a story. Now I will not put down any spoilers but something happened involving Catelyn Stark that has completely turned me off and there is not a chance in hell that I am finishing the book.

Oh and DSD you are on notice. I hate you more than Nadenu now for recommending the series to me.

What a complete **** of a book.

And after coming off of American Gods it is just such a contrast. Oh well Kite Runner is next.

You're really not going to finish it? There's a great Arya chapter iirc.

Kite Runner was very good. One of like three books that has made the tears rain down.

I'm sorry you didn't like it. I didn't much like the way that that one left off, but I'll get over it. I havn't picked up 4 yet. I've still got Knife of Dreams sitting around unopened... yes, Robert "I sh[/i]it words" Jordan as one of you so nicely put it.

I'd recomend Pillars of the Earth because it was suprisingly good. Not to be confused with Pillars of Creation which is nowhere near as good... even odd for Goodkind.

In any case, with Martin, I love the absolute disregard he has for some of the "main players" in his books. Thats all I'm going to say about that... and yea, wasn't Lady Stark getting a bit crazy at that point? No? I'm a moron...

I'm on like page 5 of The Eye of the World. Should I not be starting into this? I won it at a white elephant gift exchange at work.

I finished Feast for Crows a while back but never did go looking for a discussion on it. I wasn't all that pleased with the way he decided to chop up the book. A linear split would have been better imo. I hope it's worth the wait though.

Ok so when do they start the work on the eggs?

Pikko, Wheel of time Break down:

Books 1-5/6 are about as good as the genre can give.

Books 7,8,9 are mediocre at best.

Book 10 is a complete abomination of words that does not forward the plot one single iota.

Book 11 was a breathe of fresh air.

Eye of the Word and The Great Hunt are pretty good in my opinion. After that you should probably skip to Winter's Heart and Crossroads of Twilight just to be certain you get the most out of it (books 9 and 10). He repeats everything enough for you to not miss anything, so I wouldn't worry too heavily.

I think my opinion differs from bodhi's because I read them all in rapid succession... maybe in the time of 3-4 months. I needed 9 and 10 to get some closure and stop reading them. I still havn't opened book 11 yet, so I'm hoping that it can provide some sort of motivation for me to be interested in the series again.

He's not that bad, and what can I say, he's a felow graduate... but he's no Pat Conroy.

So I can skip #10? Good. I haven't cracked it open after suffering through #9. I was too angry to buy another one yet.

I read Pillars of the Earth years ago when I was in the navy. I enjoyed it at the time (about 12 years ago). The story revolves around the building of a cathedral. I found that aspect of the book very interesting.

Interestingly, in at least one way that I can remember, Ken Follet used a plot device that Martin is famous for - killing off main characters. Of course, perhaps to not such extremes as Martin does.

Maybe its a fairly standard plot device, but I don't think I ever came across it until Pillars of the Earth. Actually, I hope to Bob it doesn't become a standard plot device. I think, unless absolutely critical to the story development, killing off your main character(s) near the beginning or middle of a story is a cheap gimmick and I think its unfair to the reader as I feel the main character is my avatar, for lack of a better word. Yeesh, I'm such a nerd. Smiley: blush

I was wondering the same thing. What with MMO's, SO's, ALLA's and all your IRL chat and school/work, I don't see how any of you even have time to **********.
