Need some detective work...Follow

#1 Jan 09 2006 at 2:13 PM Rating: Good
I have been getting several calls a day from 516 941 1696. When I answer the phone I get silence. When I try to call the number back, I get a busy signal.

Anyone know how to find out what this is? I cant figure out why they want to keep calling me if the never say anything.

It's some New York number, but like most numbers it will have the corresponding address blocked.

You can probably pay some detective site a nominal fee and obtain the address, but I wouldn't worry about it. Most of the time when you get a call/hangup like that it's an automated system designed to do just that. Why? So the company can detect valid phone numbers and timeframes to call back for telemarketing services.

If you don't recognize the number, don't pick up.

/nod That was my first thought when I read your post. My office gets calls like that all the time. Another way you can handle it is call the police and file a report saying you're getting calls with no one saying a thing and you're getting nervous. They might think it's a stalker or somesuch and follow up on it. Smiley: tongue

Surely I can somehow use being on the do not call list to my advantage here. Smiley: confused

EDIT: Just remembered this call is going to my work number, not my home number, so I probably am not on the do not call list. My work number forwards to my house so I forgot which one was actually getting the call.

If it's one of your credit card companies then most likely they sold your info off under their terms of agreement, hell your cell company could have done this as well. The Do Not Call Listing works only in the case that someone bought your name off a solicitation list. But if they are know as "affiliates" to any of your companies..your fair game under the concept of "sharing info" and not selling it.

Do not call list also only applies to marketing and selling stuff. Survey research and market research are exempt. If you are getting an annoying call from whoever (and they actually dont hang up) dont just tell them to fuck off or hang up since they will just call you back the next time they cycle through numbers.

1) Politely (important) stop the person, ask if they have any form of "do not call list" or if they can somehow remove you from their list.

2) Wait until you get a positive reply that you have been removed.

3) Thank the person and wish them better luck on their next call.

Polite is important because if you are a puffed up **** about it the person on the other line is gonna say "yeah I put you on" and just set a call back for you during dinner time the next nite. If you are cool the person is more likely to do it for you.

The Do Not Call Registry works like that Bhod but also it creates exemptions from solicitations from affiliates of your existing creditors and those wacky little survey's you sign up for online at times. Usually the clause(s) are hidden in the terms we usually check "Yes I've read" so one can move on. Also your own credit cards can telemarket you and your at their mercy, usually though they are rather fair and give you an opt out type option that will exclude you from ALL communications except collections and account concern type calls ie fraud.

Best way is just answer the call and have pen and paper ready. When the person goes into their spiel just wait for a break and say "I need your mailing address so I can request in writing to be removed from your calling lists" If it isn't a young smartass on the phone and they don't spit it off so fast you can't even put the pen to paper, just type up a fast letter and inform them you are part of the Do not call registry and certify the letter. Alot of folks have been making easy money via settlements with companies who ignore the written communication informing them "Don't call again".

I've been getting calls from a fax machine, lately. Smiley: confused I can tell it's a fax machine because when I pick up all I get is a beep every few seconds, and it attempts to make the call three times before stopping.

The phone # is usually [Private], but every once in awhile it comes up as a New York number. Weird.

Your phone # is somehow entered onto a fax solicitation list. Call the phone company or try sending a fax back to the #.
