I guess this is one way to settle the whole question of whether Jesus existed.

I read this and I'm still trying to understand the point of why the lawsuit was filed to begin with.

That's hard core.

10 years ago I would have thought that this would happen in America....

but not now.

Cascioli should get the devil to fight for him. The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist. That and he's got more lawyers.

Boy...I sure do hope God wins. He is going to be pissed if he finds out he doesn't exist.

Cascioli says Righi, and by extension the whole Church, broke two Italian laws. The first is "Abuso di Credulita Popolare" (Abuse of Popular Belief) meant to protect people against being swindled or conned. The second crime, he says, is "Sostituzione di Persona", or impersonation.

"The Church constructed Christ upon the personality of John of Gamala," Cascioli claimed, referring to the 1st century Jew who fought against the Roman army.

A court in Viterbo will hear from Righi, who has yet to be indicted, at a January 27 preliminary hearing meant to determine whether the case has enough merit to go forward.

"In my book, The Fable of Christ, I present proof Jesus did not exist as a historic figure. He must now refute this by showing proof of Christ's existence," Cascioli said.

Hey, the guy wrote a book. I thought that's all the proof Christians needed. Smiley: bah

Read about this yesterday.

It is just a preliminary hearing to see if the case has the merits to go to court. Probably just a means for the guy to publicisize his book. Which is why the defendant is kind of like "why sue me?"

My question is this- if he somehow proves Jesus didn't exist, which is a daunting task when you're right next door to the pope, what exactly is that gonna accomplish? It'll get appealed, moved to higher and higher courts I suppose, but at the end of the day, how many Christians are going to just go "Oh. Well crap. Better convert to Judaism."

He is challenging it

The first is "Abuso di Credulita Popolare" (Abuse of Popular Belief) meant to protect people against being swindled or conned. The second crime, he says, is "Sostituzione di Persona", or impersonation.

There is no historical proof of Jesus. What little their is has been thoroughly debunked or is so questionable that it is not worth bringing to court. A guy rights a book about the historical accuracy of Christ and then pushes a court case questioning the same thing for no reason at all. How many extra books do you think he is going to sell?

I think his point is that the Church needs to prove Jesus's existence before they continue teaching it to schoolchildren as fact.

There isn't.

There are no records, tax receipts, mentions during or within 20-30 prior of his death, no official roman records of the time even allude to him except one that was written 50 years after his death and that one is questionable because it clear that the original manuscript was altered at some point by a christian monk.

...for once I kind of agree with bodhi. There is no real proof that syas that he existed. He was a figure created by the founders of Christianity in order to control the masses.

There is no proof of "Y", therefore it must be "X" and "Z", right!?

I want to see him win. If he loses the 4% of the world population that makes up strong atheism will be pissed. If he wins then the 33% of the world population that makes up Christianity will be pissed. And pissed off christians are funnier than pissed off atheists.

Nobody is saying that one can't believe in Jesus, but if there's no evidence that he existed as even a historical figure then you shouldn't be able to teach it as a fact that he did.
