in order to get the first page it has to load them all and then sort them, in the database

I like the ideas of only 2 accounts per IP address. As Kaolian well knows, I left because of the sockpuppets in the first place. They ruined the forums.

I do not like the idea of ignore poster. You can chose to not read the posts, that is your choice. Your own US constution allows for free speach. By adding in an ignore poster, are you not against your own traditions?
There is a poster here I cannot stand but I just skip his posts. I really do not find the need to have an "ignore poster" button. Do not waste the programmers time on something so trivial!

A chat system that does not require you to install software. Ezboard has a nice chat system that only requires an internet browser. A system like that would be nice!

That really wouldn't work at all, for two reasons:
1- AOL pools can have 20-30 unique users on a single IP
2- If you want a new IP, it's really really easy to get one

Last I checked, Allakhazam wasn't US Government public property

A java-y IRC client? I dunno if we'd have to pay to license one.

I am sure there are open source options available. I would be incredibly surprised if there were not.

And you have the right to ignore the "ignore poster" function.

...no?

If an obnoxious show comes on TV, I'm not obligated to watch it because the announcer has constitutionally protected free speech. The show is allowed to air, and that's enough.

And as Danalog pointed out, a message board is not required to allow free speech anyway - otherwise no one would ever be banned.

I am pretty content with things as they are, but I would use a:

1. Spellchecker at times, when I was really lazy.

2. Ignore poster would be nice at times!

3. Karma numbers, give or take, never paid much attention unless you really tickled me or pissed me off.

4. Happy

5. Happy

Fix the damn "View All Posts" thing, all mine does is time out or give me a blank page.

It doesn't really work for people with more than a couple thousand posts, it's a database problem.. the query just times out.

Is it loading them all at once and then paginating them, or does each page query post x through y?

This could be fixed by using a stored procedure with a temp table to get the records for the correct page. I came across this problem when iterating through a table of millions of records at 1000 / page. Essentially, using a Count(recID) will get you the total, then divide by the recs per page, add 1 if the value MOD's over 0.

Now with that value, use a temp virtual table to hold the post keys for that user in memory with an auto index. Now you just return TOP 1000 for records that autoindex > the value above. Simple really.

I would still appreciate a more work friendly colour format option (which the old UBB boards were).

Depending on what database you are using you can use LIMIT to grab only the set you desire. It is not supported on all DB solutions, however.

Although, I would guess you would have done this already if your DB supported it. =)

Features:

Ignore - I've always wanted this feature. And as others have said, it might persuade me to actually purchase a full membership.

Good lord. There's more people posting from the Washington D.C. area here than from any other city. Don't you people have things to do?

I have no idea what you mean by that statement. I won't remove it, but I did make it smaller; that is my compromise.

This brings another idea, which I forgot: allow users to disable signatures so we do not have to look at them if we do not wish to do so, similar to disabling avatars (which I love; thank you for that feature).

I have WoWsigs blocked at home via Firefox. Good times.

Too bad I can't do the same at work.
