When do you tell your grandparents enough is enough and take the keys?

It's not my responsibility. Not only am I unqualified to make a proper assessment on my Grandparents driving ability but I pay a very large yearly sum in taxes, registration, and licensing fees to ensure that there is a government entity that should be large enough, capable enough, and is qualified enough to assess it's licensed drivers and make the determination who and who should not drive on public streets.

Implement mandatory computer simulated driving tests every time your license is renewed. The SoS should be able to make the determination in under 15 minutes whether or not a person is capable of driving. You could set up a simulated car running assessment software in each SoS office for under $50,000. The drop in accidents alone would justify the cost.

The test doesn't even have to be that hard, the people you are trying to weed out are the ones that mistake the gas for the brake at the grocery store and drive through crowded public markets dragging bodies behind them because they forgot where they are. You could even have different programs for different types of licenses.

Driving on public streets is not a God given right. It is a responsibility that requires a certain amount of skill.

Spirish,

We had to do the same thing with our grandfather last year. Even though he's a legend around here (having been on TN's national championship team back in the 50's), you still have to lay down the law when his actions put others at risk. His deal is his altzhimers is getting bad so it's difficult for him to remember what he's doing and people he's known for years in general.

On a side note he still gets miffed when I take his tractor out.

I am going to have to go with old people on this one and this is why. They are, however, followed closely by teenage drivers.

From a governmental standpoint I agree with you. But from the point that she is my loved one, I cannot rely on the government to make that call.

California may have a ton of drivers, but at least they know how to driver, unlike the backwater hicks here.

Living in California, I have to say there are just as many ****** drivers here as anywhere else. I have seen the following in my daily commute:

People backing up on the freeway (in a lane not the shoulder): All 3 times it was a female on her phone.
Women doing their make-up
Men and women reading books (book on the steering wheel)
Men shaving (while looking in the rear view mirror)
Elderly men and women with small dogs on their lap
A lady leaning back to see the DVD playing on the screen behind the passenger seat.
Men and women so into their phone conversation the run through red lights.
Even saw a cop rear-end someone when they first came out with the Mobile Computer Terminals.

You can't really make a blanket statement about men/women drivers. Its really just too damned many people focusing on **** other than driving.

i agree with the op.

driving, especially in a big city, is a life critical skill. it requires your attention. ALL OF IT. ban cell phones in cars, period.

the only thing scarier than some teenage girl chatting away on a cell phone in a SUV approaching a school zone, is.....a guy driving and talking. lets face it. guys suck at multitasking. we either drive very well, or we converse very well. dont believe me? try talking to a guy watching a sci-fi movie and see what you get.

I find it a little amusing that my License doesn't expire until I am 65 and has a picture of me when I was 15. If the lines are as bad as I remember, it is not worth me getting a new picture, especially if I have to pay for it.
