My problem was that I usually could never tolerate any other GM.
My policy was to be completly open ended. Usually any plot-line that I had in store was always put on the back burner to make way for the stories that would develope on their own, spawning from my imfamous random-encounter-rolls.
Usually a simple trip from Bree to Rivendel could take months of real-time, due to side-tracked-ness and players getting into their own little debacles.
I let them run free with it. Although another of my views as GM, was that it is my job to ***** over the players in the most creative ways possible.
However I ALWAYS left a way out.
I hated GMs who went by the book, utterly, which was most of them.
Me: "Well, I don't care about doing this job, I hate the Prince and I want magic learning, not some cheap reward"
GM: "SO!!?"
Me: "So, I'm going to go to "this place" instead"
GM: "OK, over the hill you spot a horde of hungry dragons"
Me: "
"
Which is why I usually would end up murdering innocent people in the town while the players were in the bar drinking... and the GM could do nothing about it. Until that whole "God/Alignment" thing kicks in.... but by that time, my character would have already commited suicide
no, I'm not a good player, I have to run the game.
I never got into Mage, but it did sound interesting.
