One waitress once, did the most irritating thing. It was late at night, and we were seated. Granted, my group of friends look a little punkish i guess... visable tattoos, and lots of holes filled with various metals. But the waitress did one of the most irritating things you can do as a server. She sat down at the booth to take our order.

Come again? You got angry at her just for sitting down with you? I admit it's sort of a strange thing to do, but unless she pushed one of your friends over to make room for herself or did something else equally absurd, I really don't see the issue here. Sounds like she was just trying to set a casual atmosphere.

The thing that mainly bothers me is a screaming child. Well, not so much the kids themselves, but the parents who refuse to do anything about the issue. Now, I don't have any kids of my own yet, but I'm pretty damn sure that if I did have one, and it was screaming its head off in a nice restaurant, I'd feel compelled to pick it up and remove it from the scene as quickly as possible until it calmed down. Consideration for others aside, don't these people feel embarrassed? At least a little? Or is losing most of one's normal human emotions and becoming a cold, robotic husk of his former self part of the parenting process?

Managers that look like they haven't showered in a week coming to your table for a chat.

It's always great to see someone that is supposed to be professional look like trash.

I like my server to earn the tip. My tip is my little service report.

Even if I think the service sucked, I still leave something. Restaurants that automatically deduct for a tip, just **** me off. I know it is not the waitstaffs' fault, so I go with the flow.

However, unless the food and service were outstanding, I know I wouldn't be back.

Those automatic gratuities take from my beer money. Smiley: motz

And while we are on the subject of things I dont like at restaurants.... There is a common practice at certain restaurant chains where the waiter/waitress comes and sits right down next to you, or your wife/date, to explain the menu.

I dont know you, why are you so close? This is my personal space bubble! Wanna fuck? Damn!

I have decided that the next time that happens with a hot little waitress, I am gonna shift over and grab some cootch. Whoops! Pardon me.. Sorry...

I spose the whole idea of that crap is to make the customer feel more at home. Soooo there ya go. Smiley: sly

If you were a real boy? You could do forward somersaults as you lie to yourself. Much enjoyment, and a possible 911 call would ensue. Smiley: yippee

I just used the word ensue... The boys at the peterbilt shop will be proud!

Forgot a bit in the plot there... before she even said more than hello, she whined about being overworked and underpaid, then she did kind of a "shoo" motion against my friends shoulder till he scooted over a little more so she could sit down. It was unneeded, and a little rude. but we were polite about it, even after she starting being obnoxious.

EDIT: we weren't angry at her at all untill she threw our food at us. we were just trying to tell her "if you want to sit, do it in the break room, not at our table!" in the most polite way we could manage. and even after she threw the plates, we continued to be plesant... until the bill came.

It could be worse. When my dad was engaged to his current wife, they went to dinner at some diner with her parents. Her parents are southern baptist and very....strict. Anyway, the watiress comes over to take their order, flirts with my dad, and then sits down on his knee. If you knew my dad, picturing this in your head would make you laugh. Alot.

He said his first instinct was to let his leg go slack so that she would fall onto the floor on her butt. I dunno why he didn't.

Ironicly, in a truck stop, a desperate waiter or waitress can be a significant factor in whether Varrus gets laid or not.

So you got pissed that a waitress sat down with you and, in retaliation, you made some Mexican busboy's next hour of mopping and cleaning miserable.

Well, that makes sense, I guess.

The only thing that bugs me when I am out to dinner is other patrons. I really can not understand how some people can give a waiter a hard time for "not warm bread."

The lack of respect that some people show to a server is amazing. No need to flip out and mock the person serving you. (unless he/she 100% deserves it) I am glad most of the time they get ***** or spit served a la carte.

Ed Debevic's is a strange place. Their entire gimmick is to be as rude as possible. When I was there, one waitress walked over a table carrying a pot of hot coffee.

Those of you fortunate enough to have passed through Talooca, Illinois, during the '50s and '60s probably remember Lill's Homesick Diner on Highway 50. The Homesick knew how to feed you real beef burgers (no soybeans), homemade chili, fresh-baked bread, pies and plenty of good, hot coffee. And Lill knew how to treat people right-

Eat and get out, that was her motto. The homesick is where I learned the short order business. And while I'm no Lill, I think I've made this place something she'd be proud of, So, as Lill always said "If you like what you're eatin', order more. If you don't  there's the Door."

On the flip side, the best thing a restaurant can do it treat every patron like they are important customers. I visit a fair amount of upscale restaurants, and the best service I received was at Brennan's in New Orleans. My husband and I did brunch there wearing a suit and a dress, and we were treated like loyal customers that eat there regularly. We fell in love with the brandy milk punch there, so we visited the bar again later. The bar tender talked to us the entire time, feeding us samples of different drinks and gave us a few drinks on the house. Later we showed up for brunch again on a whim, totally under dressed. We were treated the exact same way, wearing hoodies and blue jeans, that we were appearing as if we had money. The host put the napkin in my lap for me, they asked and remembered our names, just a long list of niceties. 6 months later we returned and the bar tender and the host remembered us! We got a great table, more free drinks, and were treated like royalty. It is for those reasons that I recommend Brennan's a lot, not necessarily for the food (although brunch there does kick ***).

Again on the flip side, we were walking down the street in New Orleans and stopped to view the menu at K Pauls. There was a security guard out front, and he stops us and says "You might want to look at the lunch menu instead"....the lunch menu is smaller and vastly cheaper. My husband walks off and kept muttering about "he thinks we can't afford to eat there!" The next night, we ate there. I probably won't again.

Your husband should have replied, "Why did your fat *** eat everything off the dinner menu?"

is it possible the guy mightve been trying to be helpful and save you some money?

I liked that middle eastern joint they had that was a few streets off Bourbon (we walked from the Olde Towne Inn)

I don't think that is the case, not the way he said it. And I am not sure what middle eastern joint you are talking about, there are alot of places to eat a "few streets off Bourbon!"

not to sound like a total lush but I wasnt quite sober during the few days me & the hubby spent there. I remember "The Cats Meow" some ***** bar that had legs coming out the window, a gay bar called "Phoenix" and staying at the Olde Towne Inn - it was two streets in from the Olde Towne Inn. Ill try to find the name, the service was fantastic..I remember they had this delicious tea that smelled of flowers.

Hey, I remember that place! I ran head-first into a big green light pole nearby...

It is hard not to forget the legs coming out of the wall at that ***** bar. There is another one with a screen so that you can see the silhouette of the chick dancing...that one is memorable too.

I've begun to have a problem more and more with waitresses lately. I understand that they make less than minimum wage and I understand that the management jerks around with them. However, I've never been able to determine why that is my problem.

That being said I almost always tip 20%. The food isn't the waitresses fault, unless she splits some of the tip with the cooks... then she might have to whip some ass.

My biggest pet peve is when my drink doesn't get refilled. Keeping my drink from hitting the bottom ensures at least a 15% tip. Don't complain about that either, fuckers. Where I'm from 10% is the bare minimum, 15% is average, and 20% is a reward. I am in no way bound to reward someone for what I consider an average level of service.

What really gets my goat is when you know the waitress has given up on the tip long before the end of the meal. That is just plain disrespectful. Case in point: the other night I went out to eat at Gilligan's (never eat there, btw) and she gave us poor service from the word go. A degree of situational awareness would have probably earned her around $18-20 for her hour's work in tips. As it was I don't think she quite managed $10, if that. Why? She saw a group of late teens/low twenties and blew us off. If she had paid attention she would have noticed (from the huge freaking ring) that I'm a college graduate, that I'm married (from the other ring), and that I can afford a pretty nice engagement ring from the one of my wife's finger. Instead, we had poor service all night. I had nothing in my glass from the time the salads arived until the end of the meal. Part of my order was left out and I could go on. My wife was nice enough to give her a 10% tip... though I would hardly describe what we got as "service".

I've done my time in foodservice where there were no tips, just long hours behind the counter, I have sympathy but no desire to give a handout. I don't ask for that much, but my level of generosity decays rapidly.
#49REDACTED, Posted: Dec 19 2005 at 11:11 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Tip well and be remembered...of course if you rarely dine out I can see why you might be upset with poor service. As it is I frequent a few upscale restaurants and the waitresses make sure i'm taken care of becuase they know I'm a big tipper.

I put myself thru college and helped raise a couple babies with tips.

Let me just say that some people, no matter HOW much they may tip, are worth sucking up too.

That's my husband's biggest pet peeve. Especially when he asks for a refill and it still takes 10 minutes to get the refill. We understand some flexibility and patience when the restaurant is busy and the staff is running around to get to everyone, but when it's slow, there's no excuse.

My biggest peeve is when they say all the choices for the side dishes/salad dressings/house specials and they go so freaking fast I have to ask them to repeat what they just said. Okay, I know that rice pilaf, mashed potatoes, baked potato are the normal sides, and that most salad dressings are italian, thousand island, ranch, but still, at least don't make it sound like I can have mashedpilafpotato with italianislandranch.
