What annoys you at restaurants?Follow

#1 Dec 17 2005 at 1:00 PM Rating: Excellent
I was watching a wonderful food programme with Chef Gordan Ramsey the "F word"

F word Linky

Every week he sends his guest food critic out to look at different aspects of food. This week he was asking diners what annoyed them most at restaurants. And at number one came in "double tipping".
Now that is where a restaurant will automatically add in a service charge and STILL leave a space for a tip on the bill.

This practice really annoys me as a tip for myself is giving monetary reward for good service. I do not like mandatory tips and I like to specify the amount.

At a recent dinner in London a bill came with a service charge added. The food had been late (near 2 hours), of poor quality and the service was appalling. I actually kicked up a stink and refused to pay the service charge at all and they removed it. The restaruant gained no tip at all, as should be for bad service. That is the consumers choice though.

Do you agree that double tipping is the worst practice in restaruant? If not .. what annoys you most?

And for UK people .. you can vote on the F word website!!!

Usually the only time places where I live tack the gratuity onto the bill is for large parties (8+ generally).

It sounds common where you are. There should be a law though that those gratuities go to the server, never the management. That's simply theft, in my opinion.

I really don't like when waiters/waitresses look like they just got hired off the street. Double-tipping is bad too, but I usually don't have situations like that. I also hate when they call me "homie" and "dude".

Good for you! Most people would have paid it and sulked.

As for what annoys me, probably wait staff who argue about whether something is really wrong.

I hate when something is wrong with my food and the waiter blames it on the cook. They don't have to blame it on anyone, just fix it!

I'm no fan of Double Tipping, but that's the fault of the Restaurant, not the Waiter or Waitress. I still tip - I just tell the manager I'll not be back, and why.

On the other hand, I'm appalled at the tight-fistedness of Brits, home and abroad.

Unless a waiter is really crap I drop 10%, but for good service I add between 15 and 20%.

I know UK waiting staff are paid better than in USA*, but good waiting staff can make all the difference to dining out. And I curl up when I'm with Brits in USA and Europe who don't tip.

But this tipping automatically, that shit's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doin' their job.

When I was younger, my parents could bring me to nice, fancy restaurants and I'd act perfectly fine. I was tought how to be polite and nice, and we never got any complaints. I've seen more annoying adult parties than I've seen annoying children.

Meh. I suppose it depends on the music, and on how casual the restaurant is. In more casual places, like TGIF, I prefer to have something playing in the background. There's a place in Syracuse called the Dinosaur Barbeque, and without the blues constantly playing in the background, the atmosphere would be completely ruined.

Well I am a good tipper for good service Nobby. Having worked in restaurants and bars I know how thankless the job can be.

One dinner I remember we had appalling service, but it was not the waitress at fault. God I felt for her.
She was the sole waitress on duty serving the entire restaurant. The manager was not helping her, he was standing doing nothing at all. Our meal took so long and the food was awful so bad and cold that we complained to the manager. It was not the waitress at fault, if anything it was his fault, he could have moved his fat *** and helped her but refused to, obviously above menial tasks *sigh*

Well, we had half the cost of the meal knocked off. Our 70 pound bill was knocked to 35 pounds. As we left we gave the waitress the 35 pounds we received off, as a tip for her and her alone. She had been polite and as helpful as she could be considering. I have never seen anyone work so hard in a restaurant.

I sent the restaurant chain a full letter of complaint for the lazy manager though. That was my tip to him, get off your fat ***! Smiley: laugh

I don't like it when i see people that are seated after me getting served first. This rarely happens, but i've seen it from time to time when it's a big party verses a little party...

Don't have much double tipping around where i'm from.

There’s another good reason for removing this charge from the bill – it has been reported that many restaurants only pass on to the waiting staff the tips which were actually left as coinage in the tip tray. Those added on to the bill or paid for by credit card tend to go straight to management. Four waiters at a top London restaurant recently went to the High Court with this issue – claiming that because most customers added a tip onto their credit card, they’d missed out on almost £20,000 in tips. The court ruled in favour of management.

Now that's just BS. That's not a tip if management keps it, its an addidtion cost for your meal. A tip for good service should be going to the waitstaff not the owner/manager. I would stop going to a restaurant that did this.

I have worked as both a waiter and a bartender. We would get our cash tips, plus anything on a credit card was paid out on our *************** Gov took a lot out of the tips on the check.

Nobby, in the US, most servers don't even make minimum wage. They usually make $2.13 an hour. (Granted, it's been about 5 years since I was in the business, so it could have gone up some, but I can't see it being more than $2.50 minimum). That's the absolute lowest a tipped employee can earn per hour, so that's what most restaraunts pay.

Our checks for 2 weeks work were usually lower than one good night serving. Smiley: lol

*sigh* Silly Brits.

My only real complaint is having a waitress/waiter that just doesn't give a rats ass.

I don't really care if your dog died, your husband/wife left you, or if you contracted Hepatitis. Ok, I lied, I do care about the Hepatitis, get the f
uck away from me and don't touch my food. All I care about is that you bring me my food, and are pleasant about it. I don't need you to be funny, although it helps. I don't need you to kiss my ass, although it helps. I don't need you to be charming, although it helps, especially if you're a woman.

I tip 20%, period, if you're pleasant. ***** up my order, spill water in my lap, or forget to refill my water, I don't care. If you're pleasant and act like you care, you're getting paid. The only time I've ever tipped low, or (very rarely) not tipped at all, is when my waitress/waiter just didn't give a s
hit about me, and didn't even try to hide it.

As a wait-person, your entire function is to make me happy. If you can't do that you're in the wrong line of work.

My point

In a sophisticated restaurant, a good waiter or waitres can be a significant factor in whether I get laid or not.

Surely that's worth 20% Smiley: wink

Double tipping is annoying but whats more annoying is people who can afford a year 2000 cost of food & beverages but think they can tip like its the 1920's.

Kids. Kids bug the shit out of me in general. Now I don't eat out much, and when I do, I usually order and receive my food at a counter and end up fixing my own drink so it's not exactly fine dining. But still, I'ld like to eat my meal in relative peace. I don't want to be run into, I don't want your kid climbing up to my table, I don't want to listen to it scream/cry/whine, and I don't want to have food flicked at me.

The ones that really aggravate me are the parents that will sit on their *** while little Billy terrorizes the restaraunt and the whole time they're hollering, "Billy stop, Billy don't do that, Billy stop it, Billy come here, etc.." Of course Billy just keeps on running around ignoring whatever the parents are saying and they keep right on yapping. Jesus Christ get the fu
ck up and make the kid do what you're telling it to do. Fucking quit trying to rationalize with a bobdamn three year old you stupid fucking idiot.

Never had to deal with double tipping, but i tip 20% for the server just doing their damn job and getting me my food.

One waitress once, did the most irritating thing. It was late at night, and we were seated. Granted, my group of friends look a little punkish i guess... visable tattoos, and lots of holes filled with various metals. But the waitress did one of the most irritating things you can do as a server. She sat down at the booth to take our order.

I've waited tables, and have seen people get fired over this crap. We commented about it, asked her not to be so "chummy" and politely asked her to do her job right. She got really huffy after that.

She became really obnoxious after that, we were continually polite, but she still gave us attitude. The last straw was when she delivered our food, she might as well have thrown the damn dishes at us. The velocity of the plates as they hit the table was great enough to throw a good third of our meals off of the plate and onto the table.

Everyone asked for a refill on our sodas and water, then began to put our combined years as servers to the task of leaving a wonderful "tip." When the waitress was in back somewhere being a cnut, we all put napkins over our glasses, and flipped them upside down on the table. We left our tab on the table, we paid in as close to exact change as we could. Then we got up to leave.

cnut.

Maybe i should actually do some work now...
