I used to be 17 as well. So we're on equal footing there. Going one step further, I've had a bit of time
since being 17 seeing how people older than 17 act. Seventeen year olds are, by in large, kids.

Unless they've taken the steps to be legally emancipated, a seventeen year old in the U.S. can not enter into a contract (i.e. mortgage) nor can they work a fourty hour week, assuming they're still in school. If they're not in school, they probably wouldn't be studying for a degree unless it's a mail order GED. For that matter, their "wellbeing" is still under the auspice of the government as they are still legally minors.
