My PC took a crap!Follow

#1 Dec 14 2005 at 11:27 PM Rating: Good

I have this laptop I spent a mint on compared to any other pc I have purchased, and it is just awful. First the video card had issues, then the fan started making god awful noises when it turned on. I was holding off on calling tech support until school let out and I moved, but this evening my touchpad died. Not only that, but my USB mouse won't work either. Neither will my husband's USB mouse. Yet, they work fine in his laptop.

His laptop is my old one, a Compaq Presario that is 4 years old and gigantic. I upgraded tremendously last spring to a tiny Dell, and it is doing this crap to me. I dunno, I figured that I hate HP and Compaq, and I wanted a change. I also figured that if I spend twice what I have in the past on a pc, it would be twice as good, right?

Wrong! My husband is replacing his laptop when he gets back from Afganastan, and I don't think we will go with Dell. I am pretty upset about it.

Thank god I purchased a 4 year warranty.

Reload the laptop chipset drivers. Hte touchpad often comes in on the USB bus these days, if that is inactive, nothing linked to the bus works. you should be able to find them from the website for the laptop you purchased.

I'm sorry to hear that, it took over 5-6 years of rough life for my dell inspiron to finally bite the big one.

If it is under waranty send it back, most companies are pretty good about the whole RMA thing, sorry to hear it died though.

A technician is supposed to call me within the next 24 hours to set up an appointment to come to my house. Apparently Dell will come to you wherever you are in the US, which is nice.

And Kao, I would do that, but I am just fed up with this pc and I want the Dell guy to see it in its full screwed up glory. Let them fix it, heh.

I think your computer has taken many more "crap"s than that... probably around 679 of them.

Much love, Nephy.

Edit: Oh, and that makes 680.

The newer dell computers and laptops suck, I would not buy one now. They have nothing but problems. They have gone down hill fast qualitywise.

I was a huge fan of Dell until the last year or two.

I switched to a Toshiba laptop, and have had 0 problems with it for the last 8 months that I've used it.

My very first laptop was a Toshiba as well...thing still works...amazing little 133...

Anyone interested in a nice off-the-shelf gaming laptop should check out the HP Pavilion zd8000. It is priced lower than most Dells of similar quality, has a nice, bright widescreen and is able to run every game I've thrown at it, including WoW. I got mine for $1600. I've had crappy HP's before, but this one has not given me any problems in the 3 months i've had it.

Sorry to hear about the problems - our Dell Inspiron 8000 used to have a noisy fan issue every once in a while - I used my amazing technical prowess and smacked the **** outta the fan until it stopped. Apparently, it's learned not to **** me off. Haven't had that fan issue for a long time now.

The other pain is that in order to play some pc games that won't run with the laptop video drivers, we had to get the generic nVidia patch that's not really suited to work on laptops. Every night when we turn on the laptop, it's hit or miss that the login screen (XP) will show up - otherwise, we get a black screen. We shut down, restart, and worse case, it starts up after the 3rd or 4th time (usually only the 1st or 2nd reboot brings up the login screen).

On the other hand, my Dell desktops run great and never have had any issues. My old Dell Dimension 4100 is still used for email/work/writing/etc. My Dell Dimension XPS Gen 4 that I bought last year is used for gaming and runs great.

In fact, I've bought my wife a new Dell Dimension XPS 600 for Christmas this year. While Dell can be at times a royal pain in the ***, overall, I'm satisfied with their pc's and I like their customization capability when putting a pc together. I put the time in to do some research on finding the right pc for the best price - I always end up getting a Dell.

I've been pretty impressed by toshibas lately, and I absolutly love my toshiba stylistic tablet... which is a nice little machine.

I'm not a fan of the older compaqs and I hope the HP's do better for you guys in the future.

I'm waiting to get my hands on a VoodooPC, WidowPC, or Alienware... right after I win the lottery... twice.

yes try as koal stated with the reinstall the drivers for the touchpad. also may be time to have Dell just give you a new computer as you should still be under waranty i hope...

Dell is slow to respond, but when they do it is often to the customer liking.

hope it works out for you.

I got a nice little Alien laptop this year when they went on sale for the school year. They started at $899.

Never had a problem with their systems and we now have the laptop and two desktops.
