That has less to do with normalizing homosexuality than with the attention span of the hormonal and physically restless young male himself.
Socially speaking, most people find their gender identity at rather young ages. From here one would notice that certain roles fit into these perceived identities. One’s gender role/roles, more or less, proves ones gender identity. It could be argued that most straight men would not see this film because they would then be perceived as feminine. Part of the definition of being masculine would be that one is anti-feminine.
Gender and Sex would then be two totally different concepts; one’s sex being the biological reference, and gender being the socially constructed molds to which we should aspire to fit.
