As an American stumbling upon this blog in a search about Quebec seperatists, I am fascinated at the amount of posts that posit the theory of American annexation of the rest of Canada if Quebec seperates. You give my fellow americans far to much credit in even knowing that Quebec even dreams of such. I really do not think that America even cares. You can all rest assured that we do not want the Northwest Passage. Canada is safe because most americans dont even know where Canada is!! And Manifest Destiny is a policy long past. I would venture to say most americans do not even know what Manifest Destiny is.
Hehe. You actually registered to a site just to make one post? And you posted to the Asylum? You *are* brave... ;)
The ignorance of the masses ultimately doesn't matter. The masses wouldn't be the ones making the decisions anyway. You think the average American knows anything about tax codes, and international law, and domestic strategy initiatives? And yet somehow the US government manages to do those things constantly, right? So either there's some miracle going on everyday, or your premise is totally flawed. I'm betting the latter...
Having said that, I don't think Quebec will leave Canada. I don't think Canada will break apart. And I certainly don't think the US would annex any of it. The entrenchment of nationalism and its impact on both nations is too strong. Quebec will talk about separation, but it's primarily a political tool to try to get some extra leverage. They'd be hurt more by leaving then the rest of the country would. And even French Canadians aren't haughty enough to do that just for the sake of appearances. It's pure posturing.
