Apparently it was supposed to hit in 2029 but now they said it's going to hit in 2031.

Good bloody God, we're doomed. But i imagine by then i'll already settled into my space station somewhere on Mars. Assuming i win the lottery. And assuming somebody in Texas is devising a way to alter it's atmosphere, thereby enabling colonization. For lottery winners. Like myself. Soon as i go to Seven-Eleven. With my dollar. >< Wait i have to go to the ATM first. Damnit we're doomed.

You do realize that by the time that impacted on the surface it would be about the size of a volkswagen right? I mean, were not talking a world ending strike here.

Well actually, almost every year several asteroids come withing dangerous ranges of earth. No big news really.

Oh, and adding to that. The government wants to scare you because fear feeds consumerism. For example, ever been to a Costco before a hurricane or blizzard or other natural disaster? Thats what the companies expect you to do for the "Asteroids".

I wonder who's brilliant idea it was to name it:

Apophis- the ancient spirit of evil and destruction, a demon that was determined to plunge the world into eternal darkness.

So how long will it be until we can buy meteroid collision insurance? and what will the deductible be?

We got 3 inches of snow the other night. I had no idea that is was going to snow and only figured it out when I stopped by the local grocery store to buy some beer. The milk and bread section were wiped out.

I'm no expert, but i think the scientists who named it decided that rather than naming it, say- Dionysus (Greek god of wine and celebration i think)- they named it Apophis, perhaps to imply it's menacing threat to the Earth. This as a result could only help sway the government's decision to give the green light to fund a plan to deflect its course toward us. Wouldn't help much, but i guess it couldn't hurt. And i'm notorious for stating the obvious, as i'm sure you already knew this, lol

Nasa has estimated that an impact from Apophis, which has an outside chance of hitting the Earth in 2036, would release more than 100,000 times the energy released in the nuclear blast over Hiroshima. Thousands of square kilometres would be directly affected by the blast but the whole of the Earth would see the effects of the dust released into the atmosphere.

Ummm... yeah.

Regardless of whether or not this thing is going to hit us, it's probably about time to make sure that we do have the capabilities to deflect or destroy one of these things if it does, in fact, hit Earth. It's bound to happen sometime, and better safe than sorry.

$20 on the first big one that does hit Earth landing in New Jersey.

As someone who learned to drive in Colorado and then moved back to the South, I can say, it's incredibly amusing until you have to share the road with them.

You know, it's odd, I drive everywhere in blinding lake effect snow where I live now, but the only two times I have sort of lost control of the car were in Mississippi. I have always figured that the deal is it usually ices down there instead of getting lots of snow, and they aren't equipped to deal with any of it with salt or plows. When it does snow, it just sits in the streets until it melts. The only time things shut down up here is when it is really, really bad and the snow plows can't keep up.
