I'm constantly amazed by how far people take things in the name of religion.

No IE class, now, I assume.

LAWRENCE, Kan. - A college professor whose planned course on creationism and intelligent design was canceled after he derided Christian conservatives said he was beaten by two men along a rural road early Monday.

University of Kansas religious studies professor Paul Mirecki said the men referred to the class when they beat him on the head, shoulders and back with their fists, and possibly a metal object, the Lawrence Journal-World reported.

"I didn't know them," Mirecki said of his assailants, "but I'm sure they knew me."

Messages left by the Associated Press on Mirecki's cell phone were not immediately returned.

Sheriff's Lt. Kari Wempe said Mirecki reported the attack just before 7 a.m.

The professor said he confronted the men after they were tailgating his vehicle along a road south of Lawrence. "I'm mostly shaken up, and I got some bruises and sore spots," he said.

Mirecki planned to offer a spring course called "Special Topics in Religion: Intelligent Design, Creationism and other Religious Mythologies" after the Kansas Board of Education decided to include more criticism of evolution in science standards for elementary and secondary students.

Last week, Mirecki asked the university to cancel the class after he created a furor by sending an e-mail to a student organization mocking Christian fundamentalists.

Mirecki had referred to religious conservatives as "fundies," and said a course describing intelligent design as mythology would be a "nice slap in their big fat face." He has apologized for those comments.

Now I'm sure some of you will claim that we don't know who beat him up, etc ect balhdity blah. Well, I suspect it shore wasn't the Girl Scouts looking for their cookie money. Smiley: dubious What the hell is the point? Does this help your cause at all? Why won't people stop being dumbasses?

Argh. Frustrating day, and dumb news only makes it worse.

Mirecki is a dipshit who had a good idea and ruined it with his own zeal and lack of tact. What's worse is he's made it more dfficult now for any other place to approach ID from a philosophical or religious stance as far as academic studies go. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot Smiley: dubious

How absolutely weak of this man. But on to your questions...

The point was to get their point across that their god is the only god. Ya know, like the Muslims do all the time with bombs and stuff? Works for them, and it obviously work for these men as well. The guy was weak, he backed down. Total bullshit.

If your gonna thumb your nose at organized religion, fu
cking be a man and stand up to these religious zealots and teach that fucking class. Don't back down because they used violence as their only weapon, like they have for centuries.

I think alot of it has to do with humanity not being as developed as we like to think we are. While we have more developed thought process then our ancesters we still have issues with,w hat I believe, is natural instinct. Seeing something different seems to incite a fight or flight type response, normally we can think things through so as not to react in a socially unacceptable manner.

You can see evidence of this on the Asylum or any other close knit social group. While most people have the logic to not beat the hell out of someone for being different there is still some sort of a negative response.

Yes, it is really unacceptable that they beat up this gentleman who was peacefully teaching a topic that is still a little controversial but would have given those who are hardcore about Darwin an opportunity to examine the other side of the coin.

I suppose I should elaborate. I am disgusted by the entire thing. If all the people concerned were kittens, I'd put them in bags with rocks and haul said bag to the nearest river.

The professor himself, being an academic, would treat the subject as if he held total and unique knowledge of it doesn't surprise me: what surprises me is that people who are in our society as academics, teachers, would rather make waves than educate. He wanted the limelight, and while the consequences of it are not to be condoned, he certainly did court hatred through his actions.

On to the other side: Nothing, nothing, nothing makes me angrier than people who claim to represent God using His name to promote violence and hate, no matter time or place. It's reprehensible, asinine, and a total waste of time. It doesn't win people over to your side, it sure as hell doesn't support your argument, and it won't promote any sort of dialogue or forward movement.

However, I AM starting to understand the urge to kick the bejesus out of someone out of sheer contempt for their thought process, so maybe they did achieve something after all.

So 2 high schoolers beating a guy up gets a thread, but bombing of innocents in the name of Jihad doesn't?

You are exhausting. Just the fact that you exist depresses me. Even a dog lets go of the bone occasionally, even if it's just to take a leak on his owner's couch. Can't you drop it? It's a fucking forum. No one cares about the cliques here. Jesus, woman.

You're a bit of a space cadet, claro que sÃ? If it makes you uncomfortable, it's because it's true. People are naturally inclined to not react well to something that is different. I believe it is a survival instinct, thankfully we, well most of us, have the logic to think things through and not react in a socially unacceptable negative manner.

feel free to take things out of context & play the victim.

The only thing that you victimize is my sense of logic, but don't worry, I have tissues for the bleeding. As far as making me uncomfortable, it's nice that your imagination is working, but please, try to leave me out of your fantasies. It makes me vomit a little.
