After seeing people talking about IRC I thought I'd try it out, but after installing it of course all I got was server after server of you are unauthorized .... so after a couple of hours of IRC help pages which where like reading old IBM server trouble shooting manuals,
after trying many things like /who "wildcards" to find people with my ISP in hopes of attaining a useable server I gave up, perhaps when IRC becomes as user friendly as DOS once was,
I'll try again, till then my hats off to you all who where able to navigate that mess

I use Trillian, and was able to set it up fine with a step by step from Kao (both times, haha). Maybe he could repost that?
