Most definitely your injuries were caused by a sudden increase in activity. Running wise, it isn't good to increase your mileage by more than 10% a week. I have seen many people go up by 50-100% increase in a week. Needless to say, they ended up missing about 4-6 weeks from injuries. A person just has to train intelligently. It's too bad this our military can't see this.
Well, the army -sort of- eases you into it. For instance, you aren't required to pass the army standard physical training test until the end of training, which for me was about 20 weeks long. Plus, how can they give you longer? They need to get soldiers in an out of training as quickly as possible.
I think the biggest problem is the emphasis on running, and continuing to run even if you are hurt. You are supposed to only run every other day by regulation, but no platoon sgt pays attention to that. There is also a mentality that if you go to the doctor and get out of doing physical training because you are hurt, you are a dirt bag. You can't get promoted, and you are looked down upon. So, people continue to push through injuries. Sometimes that is okay, and I guess they are trying to weed out people who are malingering. But sometimes this causes irreversible damage that people have to live with forever, like in my case.
