Look at this news article.

Note the title: "Bush to Press for New Immigration Plan"

First 2 paragraphs:
Quote:
WACO, Texas -
President Bush is trying to build support for a comprehensive immigration strategy — and mollify conservatives wary of his guest worker plan for foreigners — even though Congress has shelved the issue for now.

Republican congressional leaders have postponed work on immigration proposals until early next year, partly because lawmakers are divided over the scope of such changes and whether foreigners illegally working in the United States should be allowed to stay.

And, of course the picture of what appears to be Bush doing the **** salute.

A Liberal Media Conspiracy, or just a coincidence? Smiley: dubious

I'd have to check the translation and get back to you....

AHA. Apparently not.

Interesting.

Roughly,
The proposal includes the creation of a new temporary work visa for immigrants whose employer wants to hire them in the United States.

The permit, which includes residence and a work authorization, will last three years and will be renewable once, but at the end of the second period, the worker will have to exit the United States.

Bush does not include a path towards citizenship in his plan.

Hmmm... I'm usually the one spotting the "Liberal Conspiracy", but not really seeing it in this case (didn't read the details in the article though). The pictures look like he's doing the standard politician's wave. Not even close to a Hitler salute.

The article does get one thing very right. It is a touchy subject, and Republicans are split on it. Um. But so are democrats. A funny thing I've noticed is that Republicans in non-border states are generally anti-immigration, while Dems in those same states are pro-immigration (a "right of entry" versus "protecting the borders" deal). When you get into the border states though, the parties tend to swap positions. Republicans in border states are generally pro-immigration, and Democrats anti-immigration. The topic changes from the more general social issues argued in non-border states, to economic issues dealing with immigrant labor and its effects on prices and job availability. Obviously the businesses would rather have cheaper labor available, and the labor union types would rather those jobs go to higher paid US citizens instead.

Dunno. It's just a funny observation I've made on the issue. And it's why it's incredibly hard for anyone to really get traction in any direction on it. When both parties are split, neither really pushes hard for any hard solution.

The truth is that while many Latinos can't vote, many can, and will rally to the cause should any move deemed too extreme occur. No one wants to alienate the base.

He plans on giving immigrant workers 3 year work visas to do, and I qote from his own lips , "the work the american public does not want to do."

Oh, believe me, people want to do the work. Just no one wants to pay them a decent wage to do it.

and this really struck my fancy,

President Bush is trying to build support for a comprehensive immigration strategy — and mollify conservatives wary of his guest worker plan for foreigners — even though Congress has shelved the issue for now.

I think they shelved it because bush is mantra is "try" rather then accomplish.

Yup. And the issue is so frought with political landmines that most folks don't want to go near it.

If you're anti-immigration, you might **** off the latino vote because they might think that you're anti-Latino and/or you're trying to prevent more Latinos from having the opportunities within the US ("What? The US is only for white people?...").

If you're pro-immigration, you might **** off the Latino vote because they might think that you're exploiting them (or at least their souther cousins) and thinking of Latinos as cheap labor to be used to make white people rich (cause only white people own the businesses that hire immigrant labor you know!).

Any strong stance either way has a potential to backfire on you depending on how successfully a political opponent can spin it. So most politicians just steer away from it entirely. Heck. Even the Latino politicians do as well. For pretty similar reasons. Depending on stance, they might be seen as a sell-out, or catering to Latinos only, losing them potential Latino or non-latino votes depending on stance and spin.

It's amazing how much egg-shell walking surrounds the issue.
