I have a friend. Tom lives with his girlfriend Jane. Jane owns a small fluffy puppy. While Jane was at work Tom had his friend Jack and his girlfriend Diane over for a visit. Diane brought her new $200 purse over with her and set it on the coffee table. While they were conversating around the kitchen table, the dog drug the purse off the table and chewed up the strap of the purse. Jack and Diane now want to be compensated for the purse, because she bought it on sale, they only want what she paid for it: $120.
Jane has flat out said it was Diane's fault for leaving the purse where the dog could get it, she wasn't there, they're not her friends and she isn't paying them a damn thing. Tom, in the interest of keeping the friendship, has agreed to pay them the money, but he feels like he should then get the purse. While it is visably damaged, it's still a functional $200 purse. And of course Diane does not want to give him the purse because they are no longer on sale and $120 is not enough to replace it.
So tell me, what's your verdict?
