Now as some of you may know, i have ears. With that in mind, I'm looking to expand my musical horizons. So what i would ike from you all if you have time, is for you to post one or two song titles that you consider to be the "best" in whatever genras you happen to be listening to. For example, if someone asked me about big band jazz, and wanted to know a song to listen to, I'd point them towards Benny goodman's Sing Sing Sing or something along those lines.

The sky is the limit here. my music tastes tend to be very eclectic and eccentric, so even obscure stuff might take my fancy. I tend to like instrumental stuff best. No country, rap, or any combination therin however.

So reccomend away!

anyone?

...

hello? is this thing on <squeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!. oh god my ears! they're bleeding!

I've been listening to the Red Hot Chili Peppers a lot this week. Their album By The Way has a lot of great songs on it.

A new folk artist I like and have been listening to is Mindy Smith. Most well known for her hit "Come to Jesus" - you can hear it at her website.

I just can't seem to get a word in edgewise without getting rated down by someone...but, anyhoo...

Frank Black
ex, well now reunited, singer of the Pixies.

I could never pick one or two favorites. Every song on every album he has put out is ground breaking.

Part of the problem is I have really odd music tastes for the most part. I could post my MP3 playlist if that would be of help?

In the mean time, on another board where i asked this question i was just told of this one:
The March of Cambreadth, by Heather Alexander. It's now the official forum anti-sockpuppet anthem!

Direct download link:
http://hell.pl/szymon/Baen/Hell's%20Faire/March%20of%20Cambreadth/March_of_Cambreadth.mp3

it's not going to be to everyone's tastes, but some of you might like it

Please note, this is a legal MP3 download, permission is granted by the author here:

I don't know why, but I see you enjoying the musical offerings of Cliff Richard immensley, that or Barry Manilow.

When you say odd music do you mean like the band 'Ween' odd?

Or odd like 'Captian Beefheart 'or 'Frank Zappa and the Mother's of Invention' odd.

Tom Waits makes music that some folks find odd, I personally enjoy his music.

gah, no, those are worse than country!

I tend to like acoustical stuff, Computer gam musice, Movie sound track stuff. Also alot of Jazz, Classical. Classic rock is another mainstay. Some celtic stuiff, though alot of that i find somewhat irritating. Some contemporary persian aucoustical. Like i said, it's all over the place.

But definitly no barry manalow or the other guy.

'The Magnificent Seven' Original soundtrack, put it on while working its really good.

Classic rock

I'm assuming you know about most well known "Classic Rock" acts, I'll recomend one that is not well known "T.REX". Led by a man named Marc Bolan. Get the album Electric Warrior it is an exceptional piece of rock music. If you're just looking for a single song try '20th century boy'.

Another excellent choice would be from the band "The Stooges", who were fronted by the legendary 'Iggy Pop'. Go for the "Raw Power" album, and in particular the song 'Search and Destroy'.

The music from both these bands still sounds fresh and can still blow the doors off of any of the craptastic bands of today like 'Mudvayne'or those 'emo-band' sissies and their mascara stained thought journals.

Guster - The Airport Song

Guster plays some pretty good college rock, I'd take their earlier albums over the later.

Pink Floyd - One of These Days

One of the few Pink Floyd songs that everyone and their grandmother haven't listened to, but is still rather good. Plus, the only lyric is, "One of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces." which has to count for something. If you're looking for something quirky, I suggest downloading the entire album (Meddle) and listening to Echoes. 23 minute long songs for the win!

The Gladiator.
All the Star Trek movies.
The Abyss.

Star Wars.

Hrm. This is a hard one, heh.

Since you said you like some rock, and some acoustic, try Richard Thompson. If I was to listen to celtic, nothing but the Chieftains will do. Generas I happen to be listening to? Erm...it is really all over the board. I'll just put what I have been listening to in the car lately.

Delta Blues
John Lee Hooker - Whiskey and Wimmen
Muddy Waters - All Night Long, Mannish Boy, Champagne and Reefer, Rollin' Stone...Muddy Waters is just great across the board
Elmore James - Crossroads
Mississippi Fred McDowell - John Henry

Memphis Soul
Booker T & the MG's - Green Onions, Hip-Hug Her
Sam & Dave - Hold on I'm Comin, I Thank You, Soul Man, also great across the board
Johnnie Taylor - Who's Makin Love
Otis Redding - You Don't Miss Your Water, I've Been Loving You Too Long, great for "sheet music"
Rufus Thomas

My list is going to grow too long if I post a few songs in all of the genera's I listen to. I'll just leave it with those because, well, that is where I started, heh.

Currently I've been listening to an MP3 CD I made. It started today on Lacuna Coil. Definately worth a listen if you're into metal at all. For a jazz type, Nina Simone is another artist I would recommend.

Two words: John Fruschante. Very very interesting stylings.
To get the full brunt of his eccentricity, the album most suited to fulfill is titled "Smile from the streets you hold"

Hmm, i'm missing some of the things on angsty's playlist...

here's just a basic dump of most of my mp3 collection. It needs organizing, but it isn't quite as bad as it looks since most of the songs themselves are in folders. Notably missing is most of my classical and jazz collection, which is on the other computer being sorted at the moment. I also have about 1200 other unsorted MP3's on various cd's and dvd's ive made over the years.

This is by no means a conclusive list, so please do suggest things and genres that are not on it.

After taking a quick scan, I'm thinking a metric ton of Yes and Alan Parsons would fit right in.
