and inventive idea however, the fact that it has a hand crank to charge the battery seems like something out of the flintstones.
Yaba daba dooo
the reason for this is simple, in a lot of 3rd world countries there are vast majorities of places without power. this gives them the ability to have use of the device. also IIRC it is in addition to an external standard power cord for laptops so makes it even better then normal laptops.
this has been in the works for over a year and i am really glad to see that it has come to fruition.
mark one more win for Linux.

What is the $100 Laptop, really?
The proposed $100 machine will be a Linux-based, full-color, full-screen laptop that will use innovative power (including wind-up) and will be able to do most everything except store huge amounts of data. This rugged laptop will be WiFi-enabled and have USB ports galore. Its current specifications are: 500MHz, 1GB, 1 Megapixel.
heck with all of those features $100 is a very good price. to make a laptop with all of those features would run the consumer in the US around $300-$500 for the same capabilities.
also IIRC there is no hard drive it is all flashrom like USB sticks, thus the limited data storage so no games for them, but they can browse the web, use OpenOffice for word documents etc.
very kewl idea.
