Samosa's are an Indian thing and do look like that, they are generally just a fried pastry filled with either meat or veggies - it depends on who is making them. I prefer mine with potato and veggies and mango chutney...oh the craving. Whatever Flea ate wasn't that, it was a Greek thing that sounds like it was stacked with Phillo dough like Baklava, but savory and with meat instead of sticky sweet and full of nuts.

Whatever it was, it sounds good. It sounded to me like Nexa might have figured out what it was.

Sounds like Souvlaki to me.

Sometimes served on a skewer, sometimes in a pitt-type bread, but I have had bite-sized souvlaki.

More common on the greek mainland I gather, (not been there much) but I have had them as bar-snacks in the islands.

Are you sure they were greek though? If not, they sound laike samosas as someone mentioned earlier

It sounds like souvlaki to me too. That's one of my favorite Greek dishes.

I think I misunderstood her description...I was envisioning this Baklava type layered thing with meat. So it is stuffed and closed off like samosas? Like a pocket-type thing?

Turns out they were from one of the parents, a Somalian lady. She said they were sambusas. They look like the samoosas Katie posted, but are filled with tuna meat that has been marinated in ginger, vinegar and garlic cloves and whoo hoo yumminess.

I can't find a recipe online, and when I look, it tells me that sambusas are from the Muslim coastal areas of Ethiopia.

Take fresh thin strips of tuna - marinate for 10 minutes (no longer) in vinegar (lemon juice works too), oil, ginger garlic and chillis. Add breadcrumbs (or cous-cous), coriander or parsley, turmeric and salt and pepper.

Flash fry for 2 mins.

Wrap in filo pastry (I use 2 layers). Deep-fry in peanut oil (sesame oil if you like spicy) and voila

(My samosa recipe, but sounds very similar to sambousas)

There is this Ethiopian place in Memphis, TN that I eat at regularly. It is so unbelievably good. It's all eaten with your hands, with a fermented flatbread. Very cooked vegetables, spicy stews, stuff like that. I really love it. Yum.

We have a winner. I am ****-poor at frying since I am a big pansy that doesn't like burns on her hands and face, but I will try this. Thanks, Nobby!
