I was at an assignment for about seven hours today, and they had snacks that people brought in in the teacher's lounge. I went later in the day when there was no one there, and I had this delicious triangle-shaped pastry thing stuffed with slightly spicy meat and herbs. Looked like it was fried (kind of like wonton dough) and it was HEAVENLY. Anyone know what the hell it was? I think it may have been the spankopkpkkpita or however you spell that.

Neither has meat in the recipe but perhaps some enterprising Greek person added some.

Nah... Now that I think of it, it was some sort of shredded meat with onions and bits of green herbs but I don't remember any cheese or dipping sauce. I thought they might be mandu from googling it, but I may just call the school tommorrow and ask what they were. The taste reminded me of samoosas, but no potato dumpling.

Sounds Moroccan to me, perhaps Bastilla?

This them?

Geek meat pie thingies

1 lb. ground beef chuck, lean
1 lb. ground lamb, lean
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 onions, chopped
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon oregano, crushed
1 cup tomato sauce
pinch of cinnamon
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup butter, melted
12 sheets Phyllo pastry

In a skillet, saute ground meat in olive oil with onions until browned. Season with salt, oregano and pepper. Add tomato sauce, cinnamon.
In a small bowl, beat eggs and stir in cheese. When ground meat has cooled, fold in the eggs and cheese mixture.

Butter a 9x13 inch baking pan. Arrange six sheets of Phyllo pastry on bottom of pan, buttering each sheet. Spread a layer of cooled meat mixture evenly on Phyllo. Cover with remaining six sheets, brushing each with melted butter.

Trim edges of Phyllo to fit pan with a sharp knife. Slice through top of pastry to form diamond shapes.

Bake in a preheated 350°F oven until pastry is golden crisp.

May be served hot or cold.

I know the things of which you speak, Flea. I picked some frozen ones up in the grocery store a couple of months ago just to try them. Not bad, for frozen instead of fresh.

I know where they are in my local BiLo but I can't remember the name on the box...

I don't know if this is them (no tomato when I dissected mine), but they sound delicious as well. Someday I shall point imperiously at them and urge them into my belly.

Speaking of BiLo, I shopped there for the first time last weekend and they have scented grocery bags. Kinda neat.

The cat likes these. I make sure I always save her one to play with. She gets good and stoned off the catnip and then goes to crouch inside the bag. The first time it happened, I almost panicked until I realized she hadn't actually decided it was an acceptable substitute for the litter box.

I am a dog person. I'm a cat person, a snake person, a deer person, a rabbit person, a duck person, and despite all the nasty things I say about them even a squirrel person.

I get along with animals much better than people. <Insert Aegis joke here.> Even the crawlies, which tend to make me scream and mince about like a little girly man, have their own alien attraction about them.

Overall, I do get along with dogs quite well. They're easy to understand and easy to make friends with. The two I have at home always seem to amaze my acquaintances with the way they do what I tell them. I say it's all in the training.

I found this recipe for Bastilla online. It looks about like what I've had before. Take a look and see if it seems right, or maybe you could ask the folks you were with what it was?

Okay, I'm all intrigued into what you ate now Flea. If you find the name, let me know please.

Speaking of food, anyone ready for the cooking marathon for Thanksgiving? Thought it was just going to be me, hubby and our kids, but it looks like we'll be having another 6 people over for dinner. So I'm scrambling to figure out what else to cook.

I will. For my Thanksgiving festivities, I'm bringing over a mango mousse for dessert. You could also make potato salad, pumpkin soup, and other fall-centered meals. Never underestimate a good soup. It'll be cold out. Oh, and make hot chocolate and spiced cider!

I have never done the whole dinner, but I always make this pumpkin pie cheesecake with gingersnap and toasted pecan crust to bring over to whatever house I am eating at. It is so darn good, and people are suprised by the whole idea of pumpkin cheesecake. People also love it who hate pumpkin pie.

I think as a whole though, everyones idea of Thanksgiving is a bit different. Flea just said "mango mousse" and I thought "huh??" If I was to make dinner, I would do turkey, cornbread stuffing, sausage stuffing, english peas, mashed potatoes, and some other vegetable. My family always had creamed onions, and I hated them with a passion. I am not so sure I will carry on that tradition. Oh, and two kinds of cranberry sauce...the kind shaped like the can, and the chunky kind with orange peel.

I am hungry!
