After seeing some news articles about this and laughing so hard thinking it was April the 1st, I now realise that some people are serious about this theory in the US.

How do the Americans on this board feel about "Intelligent Design"? For a group of people claiming to be non-religious they certainly are hell bent on proving that the earth was made 6 thousand years ago by a God .... I was laughing SO hard when they tried to claim that man walked with dinosaurs 6 thousand years ago Smiley: lol

All smells of fanatic Evangelism to me Smiley: disappointed

So, what are your thoughts? I admit mine, on seeing it all and judgeing and assessing carefully all the evidence, can be summed up in one precise english word "************** Smiley: tongue

When I was in University, a Catholic University in NYC, I took a class called “God, The Universe and Science.” 9 credits worth of theology was required for graduation. The basic premise is that when you look deep into the patterns of science and the order of the universe and things there must be a God who designed it all. When I first heard about Intelligent Design, my first thought was they must be talking about the same stuff as this class. The first thing they taught in this class was that the fundamental proximate of Judeo-Christian religion is faith, and if you could prove God exists then you cannot have faith and therefore God must have designed the universe as such that you could never prove he exists. That seems right, not that I personally belive in all or any of it, but as a religious theory its was certainly better than what I read in the papers is Catholic belief.

I was not sure why this should be taught in schools as an alternative to Evolution as the class taught that science is good, we should embrace it and all it can teach us, and the order of things is just the “fingerprint of God” as the professor said it, not actual proof of Gods existence. When I read what these ID kooks are supporting I knew they were talking about something different. Although the ID theories are not that far off from what this class taught, it has been twisted in an anti-Evolution and anti-Science manner that IMHO goes against the whole point of their argument.

If there is an Intelligent design to the universe would not it be through science and evolution that it is achieved not instead of it?

I've sent emails to both Kansas State University and the University of Kansas inquiring about admission to their Intelligent Design curricula (in the Biology Department, as opposed to, say, Cosmetology or Architectural Engineering).

No word back as yet, but I'm confident they must offer degrees. The University of Kansas has an Evolutionary Biology curriculum, after all.

By in large, most of the Americans here feel it's silly and unscientific. Those who disagree argue mainly on philosophical grounds such as Totem saying that Evolution is really a religion.

In positive news, the Pennsylvania school board who approved it was voted out and replaced with all Democrats Smiley: grin Now, onward to Kansas!

People are stupid. I think its a bunch of hogwash and I dont think it should be included in the public school systems. I dont want the school teaching my children religion. I'll teach them what I think they should know. If and when that time comes, we will go to the library and research many different religions and then they can make their own judgements.

Any news links to this? I only saw a 10 minute article on the TV news and would like to know more!

Was there a parent backlash at the lunacy of approving this to be taught?

I think it's retarded as well, to try to put into science classes that is...

The big argument from these people, is that evolution as well is not fully grounded and must be taken with "faith" as well.

personally I think that it's inevitable that science must clash with philosphy now and again... esspecially with waht we are finding out through quantum physics.. but that's another thread..

Evolution does not involve some unseen higher consciousness... such as ID intonnates... so NO, I don't think that it belongs in a science class...

ALTHOUGH to ban "mentioning" it, i think may be a but extreme. Then again, not all are as open minded.

Voters boot ID friendly school board

Note though that this was in Pennsylvania, and doesn't affect the recent Kansas ruling.

no, they'll say something along the lines that we're doomed, by pushing God out of school, and that when the next disaster strikes the area, it was God bringing down his wrath or some such nonsense

I don't understand Gay Marriage, therefore God must have designed it.

But for the seasoned posters, take 2 seconds to look at pages 2,3,4,5,6, etc for "How americans on this board feel". We've said it a dozen fucking times.
