But it's wrong to single out one state's pork project. If we're serious about shared responsibility, let's eliminate all pork projects in all states. To find $50 billion in tax breaks, we could postpone a planned tax break for millionaires, and we could temporarily roll back one of the tax cuts for those who make an income of more than $2 million per year.

Did you skim over that? It seems pretty specific.

If this is what passes for quality statesmanship for you guys, no wonder our Congress is filled with ineffectual leaders. And no wonder pork continues to hang off the sides of our country's budget.

I guess I demand a little more from my elected leaders.

Sure. Because words like "enemies of freedom" and "as long as it takes" reek of preciseness and specificity.

Joph beat me to the punch. I had the Obama website up and phone in hand (I get unlimited long distance) and was gonna call them up.

Anyways why do you have to be knocking another person of colour. Black actors man, black actors... you gotta stick together.

That was Lubriderm who contacted them. I think I got as far as the website, saw something saying you'd need to file a FoIA and decided I didn't care that much about what Totem thought.

Here's my idea of what constitutes a good elected leader:

TOM MCCLINTOCK Republican
1029 K STREET, SUITE 44
SACRAMENTO, CA 95814
BUSINESS: (916) 448-9321
E-MAIL: Tom@TomMcClintock.com

State Senator

And, yes, he had many pork projects he'd've cut in Kalifornia-- it was a major plank of his platform in 2003.

*************************************************************

So, Flea, you liked how he blithely avoided just how he would go about cutting pork by appealing to the broad concept of everybody just rolling up their sleeves and "share responsibility," did you? As for the $50 bil he might be able to gin up, I'd have to see if his numbers are correct. Of course, there is plenty of wiggle room in the terms "postpone" and "temporary."

As for armed conflict against terror, then, yes, as long as it takes. Period. I don't have a problem with that. Unfortunately for you such things don't seem to lend themsleves to a nicely packaged timeline. But being from Peru and seeing that country's war against The Shining Path you know that, wouldn't you?

Joph, that'd be tough for you to do, considering that as the teacher's pet you sit in the front of class and simper at her when you aren't busy handling your hall monitor duties. Passing notes violates your A/V club code of conduct, doesn't it?

Good thing you didn't have a balanced budget or reduced deficit spending listed in there, eh?

Obama speech at the Democrate Convention, was the closes to being like that of a Statemans that I heard recently. American's wouldn't put up with listening to a real statesman these days. We like our politics in easy to disgest bites.

What we now call political debates are a joke compared to the Lincoln, Douglas debates.

As to beltway politicans, we get only what americans vote for. IF you don't want to see Pork in the budget, then start looking around at your own state and call your congressman and senators. I know at least here at the city level, there has been an uproar over the fact that the city wants to give tax breaks to have a Hotel built downtown, while our schools are still trying to pay off the loan from the city, that kept the school system from going bankrupt last year.

The number one reason why I am a proponent of a flat tax is because it puts the government directly in a position to nurture economic growth. What's bad for all of us is bad for it. They can't play any more tax adjustment games and villify one demographic over the other to support their own bloat.

A Flat Tax is the one ammendment our forefathers should have thought ahead about, because the government wants to be above whatever malaise the people suffer and get away with almost criminal neglect of fiscal responsibility in doing so.

Only when the big G has a realistic stake in the economic success of the country will it act in a repsonsible manner. We will ALL benefit from a more responsible government. As much as I agree with Obamas policy in many regards, he is sinking down to vilification and thus leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth. I hope he opens his mind up a little bit or something. The whole "Rich vs. Poor" thing is silly and devisive.

No wonder I make no headway when discussing even basic level politics around here if you can't even connect your comment about passing him a note asking if he likes me back and me cracking back about you being the perfect tattle tale schoolboy.

I was going with your flow, dude, riding the wave.

Alpha,

Do you actually think corporations pay taxes?

Clearly Alpha is the product of a public school education, and a democrat (big surprise).

Here we go again. Corporation A creates a widget, now the govn comes in and says Corp A has to comply by paying a certain amount to the govn, what you regard as taxes. So Corp A figures in the cost of compliance to the govn and in turn adjusts the cost of creating and selling their widget to reflect this. So when Joe purchases his nice new widget he's already paid for the corporations cost of govn compliance. Now if the cost of compliance wasn't there the cost of creating the widget decreases. You may say well the Corp A will continue to charge the same amount thereby "gouging" the public. But in reality what happens is Corp B realizes the cost of producing their own widget has decreased and they lower their price in order to drive Corp A out of business and grab market share. Thus every Corp that produces widgets follows suit and what you get is a lower priced widget.

Corporations pass any cost of compliance to the customer. Why is this so difficult to comprehend?

Achileez

You do realize that cost doesn't determine price, right? Supply and demand do.

While it's true that cost factors into supply, it's nothing like what you've stated.

They're just billed as conservatives. Unfortunately the two major parties are becoming so polarized that phrases such as "conservative Democrat" are no longer commonly spoken.

Obama's little editorial piece paints his views as just that: fiscally conservative. I don't know enough about the man to like/dislike his views but the editorial he wrote was nothing but good sense, and thus good publicity.
