No. I had hair to be highlighted. DSD would kick me if she knew I dyed and highlighted my own hair.

I trim my own bangs, I cut Mr.Katie's hair. I dye and highlight my hair. I also do my sister's and my mother's hair. I also do manicures on Mr.Katie when he's in a mood to let me be a silly little girl.

Manis and brows I can totally see. Bangs are a pain in the *** if you have a cowlick there, which 80% of the population seem to have. But color. In case you are unaware, professional color is watched over by the stateboard of cosmetology, ensuring the consumers safety. Those colors sold in your local convenient stores are not under such strict guidelines. So if you mess up your hair or something happens, you have less ground to stand on. You COULD call up the company or try a civil lawsuit if yu really wanted to, but the companies are so big they could care less I have found. And you would be stuck going to a salon and pay $200 to fix up your hair as opposed to paying the $50 for a highlight every 6 months.

Now granted it doesnt happen often, but it is not uncommon. I've had my share of people weeping in my chair as I try to fix what they did on their own

I've been highlighting my own hair for about 15 years. I've been lucky, not messed it up once. But I try to be careful.

I don't do straight color though, not even from a professional. Too scary.

I've a question concerning highlights. Is there any way to get them done without having to suffer the indignation of wearing that utterly ridiculous little hat? My sylist insists that it's simply not possible, but I don't believe her. I'm firmly convinced that she does it to make hitting on the girls that work for her too embarassing to accomplish effectively. Luckily I have no shame.

The only other way for hair your length is to use a comb and "freestyle" the color in. It's tricky, and your stylist would have to have the balls to do it, and its used more for just areas of highlighting as opposed to an all around highlight, i.e. you want your bangs highlighted but nothing else.
but if you're looking for an all around highlight on your length of hair the only way to go about it is the cap. But think of it this way, everyone else looks goofy they're not going to be paying attention to you.

One thing I'll do for my male clients if they feel uncomfortable is find them a little corner off to themselves and put up a chinese screen so no one can see them.

Hell, for the past three years I've just been wishing for baldness. Hair is a nuisance.

Several years ago I tried for blonde highlights in a box and they turned my hair red instead of blonde. I will never do that again. When I got to the point where I couldn't afford to have my highlights done professionally because of college and not as much work, I had my stylist dye them out. Suprisingly, I have no roots and you would never guess I ever had them.

Someday I would love to put them back in though. And have a haircut! So expensive...

while it can be expensive to do, if you do a decent highlight, esp with a foil, they last forever. Most of my clients get a touch up only once every 6 months because the roots dont show as quickly a s aone process color. So while the initial cost is more than a regular color, due to the amount of time it takes, the prices averages out.
Although I keep my prices relatively moderate. I don't charge an arm and a leg like they do on Mewbury st in boston.

Mr. Katie's gone again? For how long this time?

No blonde highlights to comfort you? (Just a nod to thread continuity, y'understand.)
