In Scandalous Times, Bush Could Learn from Clinton
Friday, November 04, 2005
By Patrick Basham

With the White House shrouded in scandal, the biggest obstacle to George W. Bush’s political comeback is that he’s no Bill Clinton.

The heaviest millstone around the president’s political neck isn’t the case against Scooter Libby or the continuing investigation into Karl Rove. Rather, it’s the growing public perception that, unlike President Clinton in the 1990s, Bush is presiding over an unsuccessful, even incompetent, administration.

...

Back in 2000, George W. Bush’s presidential campaign drew an explicit contrast between its candidate’s high ethical standards and Bill Clinton’s scandalous personal behavior. Five years later, there is tremendous irony in the fact that President Bush, if his second term agenda is to survive this scandal, needs to give America a reason to rate his own presidency along Clintonesque lines.

its quite simple really,

what you are wittnessing is the republican base trying to distance itself from this sinking ship in order to try and salvage some credability for the state elections, and mid term elections.

yes, they will eat their own young. the moral majority working for you.

Well its an not written by a normal fox news reporter but rather kind of an op-ed piece by a guy from a think tank.

But yeah you could see in the virginia elections that the republican tried to distance himself from Bush. However you saw the same thing with democratic candidates in the wake of the Lewinsky scandal.

Bush decided that he had earned a lot of political capital in thw wake of his re-election. The republicans got majorities in both houses of congress, the middle of america seemed to be siding with him etc.

However since then there has been a steady erosion of support as the war drags on, as his administration is mired in corruption and cronyism, as it becomes increasingly clear how ineffectual his domestic and foreign policy is he is losing support of moderate republicans on some issues (not all but some). Clinton had to deal with similar problems (lewinsky, whitewater, etc) however the nation was booming, and as much as people could attack the man himself they couldnt attack his policy and the results, plus he had that natural scoundrels charisma.
