TOPEKA, Kansas (AP) -- At the risk of re-igniting the same heated nationwide debate it sparked six years ago, the Kansas Board of Education approved new public school science standards Tuesday that cast doubt on the theory of evolution.

The 6-4 vote was a victory for "intelligent design" advocates who helped draft the standards. Intelligent design holds that the universe is so complex that it must have been created by a higher power.

Critics of the language charged that it was an attempt to inject God and creationism into public schools in violation of the separation of church and state.

All six of those who voted for the standards were Republicans. Two Republicans and two Democrats voted against them.

"This is a sad day. We're becoming a laughingstock of not only the nation, but of the world, and I hate that," said board member Janet Waugh, a Kansas City Democrat.

The ID arguement has been hashed out pretty excessively here but I though some might want to hear the final outcome.

Besides the implied thought of religion in the ID theory, what bothers me is the arguments and quotes i have seen from ID. In the realm of science, it's understood that there is always something to discover. Theories abound and continually we find more links to help support or debunk these theories. With ID it sounds like what they are implying is in order to have a neat tidy little package without any gaps they throw in this Intelligent design. It takes awy the importance of searching for more evidence either for or against the theory of evolution.

Honestly the more annoying part isn't the trying to get ID into the science class bit. There's already a case farther along in Pennsylvania on the same issue.

It's this part that's wacko:

Quote:
In addition, the board rewrote the definition of science, so that it is no longer limited to the search for natural explanations of phenomena.

So they're getting around the "but you can't teach a non-science topic in science class" argument by redefining science? Kinda reminds me of Indianna trying to legistlate the value of PI. Silly...

But then again if a nationalized secular state such as Turkey can continue its slow slide back to Islamic fundamentalism why not the south with christian fundamentalists?

Would anybody notice or care if we kicked Kansas out of the Union?

Only if we can move Lawrence first.

At least move Love Garden. Damn fine record store.

Spending a lot of time in Lawrence when I lived in Kansas was about the only thing that kept me sane.

...and having lived there, this sort of idiocy out of Kansas doesn't surprise me in the least

I just want to point out that neither Kansas nor Pennsylvania is in the south.

If CA goes, Oregon, or at least the NW portion of it, goes with them. The rednecks east of the Cascades can go ***** their cows.

Hold the secession train for just a damn minute!

Historically, secession hasn't worked too well in this portion of North America. I've got mixed emotions about the right or wrong behind it, but the fact remains just that: a fact.

I'd also like to point out that the South lays no claim to Kansas. Weuns have noticed and take exception to the fact that certain Yankees, any time they notice ignant behavior, no matter the vicinity of said ignant behavior, immediately invoke the fundamentally Christian South. I resent that allegation. I resent the alligator. I offer you the opportunity to insert your ignant accusations up your fundamental *******. That was not my sister.

Everytime this debate comes up this is ID answer, its the basis behind all their arguements. Its horse shit. It is so easy to pin everything on a "God" because you never need to explain yourself. The answer will always be God made or did it or created it.

Here is an ID answer to an obvious question:

Quote:
Q: "Why did God create such a vast universe and other planets if there is only life on earth?"

Quote:
A: Psalm 19:1 says that "the heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows His handiwork." Everything that God has made, be it you and me, or wildlife, or angels, or stars and planets, have been created for His glory. When I see a breathtaking view of the Milky Way or peer at Saturn through a telescope, I am amazed at the wonders of God!To answer your specific questions: Space and planets were created for God's glory

Smiley: oyvey

Is it such a sin to want to learn? To discover and enjoy the complexity of our universe without having the generic, "God created it with a stick" answer?

Speaking of ignorant hicks. I'm sorry to say they passed Proposition 2 in Texas yesterday. Bleh..... (Ban against gay marriage)..It makes me physically ill. It passed 76% for and 24% against.

That doesnt surprise me, though it does **** me right off. I'm not exaggerating when I say this town has a church atleast every 3 blocks. Its ******* crazy. You cant get any where in this town unless you are a member of one of the bigger churches. Shake your hand on Sunday morning and then stab you in the back on Monday. Blech!

I got off work at 4:00 yesterday so I did go vote. I'm one of the proud 24% Smiley: yippee

I don't people realize that this will only breed more hate. I don't get it. I know what you mean about churches, I live in a rural area of Dallas/Ft. Worth and there is one practically on every corner.

Ah then we are only about 2 hours apart. I'm in Abilene. I wish I'd known that yesterday was the vote. I'd have taken Mr.Katie and myself down there to vote.

You sure it was the final tally. In CA, last night, they were reporting several Propositions passing, even though only 30% of the precincts were reporting (per the scrolling fine print on bottom of the screen). Now with 99.5% (per the CA sec. of State's web site) reporting the resulst are opposite of what they were reporting last night. ******* media.

Edit: Actually looks like not a single Proposition passed, though some were close.
