I have mixed feelings on this one. Sure, it would help secure things somewhat, but there are soooo many other things to worry about that this one would be a drop in the bucket comparitivly. Plus, most people that leave them unsecured do so because they don't know how to.

Also, enabeling WEP on a gaming network can bog down game performance. i'f i'm hosting a lan event, I generally leave it off. Under this law in new york, that would be illegal.

So what do you think? Worthwhile law? or government intrusion?

The other bit of concern is that anyone who is tech savvy enough to realize to steal bandwidth is potentially tech savvy enough to download a simple program to break WEP encryption and get access anyway.

Will I DO agree that for most business users that it is generally a good idea to enable WEP, also MAC address filtering and turn of broadcasting of your SSID. I don't believe that it is feasible to have every user of wireless routers to have WEP security.

I don't think it is something that should be governmentally regulated.

If you're going to outlaw computer stupidity, start with having 2 year old unpatched security holes open on your OS, or active viruses/trojans/worms

having an open router is so far down on the internet security-o-meter as to be nearly negligable

Ignorant legislators. Sure, every place has to have a server and a "firewall". I've not seen any of the wording of the proposed law, but will they define exactly what needs to be filtered? What would prevent setting up a filter set that allows everything? How do they intend to enforce these things, go around to each business and hack into their systems? I'm fairly certain that doing so would be illegal in the first place and proving so in a court of law shouldn't be too difficult. That is of course unless they can somehow tie this issue into Homeland Security, then we're all pretty much fucked.

Yea thats pretty dumb.

I think computer education needs to be increased across the country. Politicians need to also stop making laws on crap they know nothing about... but thats not really the issue.

Wireless security is pretty far down the list of problems, as you mentioned.

I know that WEP and WPA can both be cracked. I use WPA and a whitelist to prevent unauthorized access. The WPA (with a strong password) shouls keep most snoopers out and the whitelist should keep out most leechers. I hope.

I know it isn't infalible. It is all I care to have the effort for though.

I think this shouldn't be government regulated. Attacks are caused by the attacker, not the person that unknowingly provides the gateway to do so.

The first thing that comes to my mind is public transportation. Say, for example, a terrorist (sorry to bring that term into play here) brings a suitcase of explosives on to a bus and blows up a building at the first stop. Does the government come in to require that all bus stations check baggage for potentially hazardous materials from being transported?

They are fighting an issue by the wrong means. Insecure networks are not the problem here. The ones that exploit these networks are the ones that need to be held responsible.

I just use a WEP key because, quite honestly, I don't know how to secure my network otherwise. Maybe I don't broadcast my SSID but uhm...I really don't know, heh. I was pretty pleased with myself when I figured out how to enable WEP and get all of my computers back online - I just left it at that. I also figure that more than likely the people around me have about the same knowledge.

Anyway, I see three other unsecured wireless networks around me where the extent of my neighbors' knowledge was probably plug in router, turn on computer.

What is next, a law requiring my front door be locked?

Personally, my network is unsecured only because of the fact that there aren't any houses that are close enough to get a signal, and anyone that would try to get a signal would have to be in my driveway. I figure I'd probably notice that.

Well, also I'm on dialup (yes, shared over wireless)...so really...what are they going to steal...
