Look. There are a host of problems with socialism. One of them is the simple fact that you've now made the government at fault if there's not enough "whatever" to go around. You've also made the government the legal process, not only by which benefits are provided but also through which complaints must travel. This works great as long as the people as a whole trust the system and believe that it is fair. But when people decide that it's not fair (right or wrong), the result is civil unrest aimed at the government itself. Because they see the government as the instrument of oppression against them. It's not exactly the ideal that some would like to paint it as.

but.. there kinda really is enough to go around.

Heh. Then why are these folks in France living in slums? You don't think they'd be rioting if they were living in upscale homes with overviews of the vinyards do you?

So, realistically a government should allow widescale violence for weeks straight? Think it's just a phase?

I listened to multiple interviews with rioters this morning and not a one of them cited "lack of freedoms" as a reason for their actions. Every one of them talked about their slum-like living conditions and unemployment though.

Of course, it could be that the liberal media was only airing the interviews that made socialism sound better.

How does that make socialism sound better?

Let me see if I've got this straight. So, under socialism, we vastly increase taxes in order to pay for government provided benefits for all citizens. And at the end of the day, we end up with twice as much unemployment, just as much racial stratification, and just as many people living in slums and being generally unhappy. Oh. And riots, although people argue about whether they're rioting because of the slums they live in, or the fact that they're made to feel like second class citizens due to laws restricting their expression.

What was the point of all of that again? Regardless of the specifics of *why* these people are unhappy, it's still hardly a ringing endorsement of the system. The whole reason socialism exists is the assumption that the costs are worth it because "the people" will be happier under a socialist system. Clearly, at least in the case of France, they are not. So one has to question what the benefits of all of that taxation and huge government programs are?

That's part of the rub here though. France is a special case, with a history of societal uprising etc etc. Plus they are all cunts.

Beats me. You were the one saying you thought it wasn't about economics but about freedoms. Note:

Those interviewed had nothing at all to say about freedoms and everything to say about the wealth divide.

There's no way you could be off so either the interviews were staged or else the rioters don't know what they are rioting about.

The oppressed, The oppressed,
Put Sarkozy to the test
Stuff a rag inside a Molotov
Let fire do the rest

Riots in
All the towns
We just want to burn 'em down
Cerfew orders are refuted
When young teens are 'lectrocuted

They won't take a hard stance
After all, kids, this is France
And surrender here is never second best

Mass arson is the way
to brighten up our day
The oppressed! The oppressed! The oppressed~
