You'll know why:

Our friends over at the AP wrote:
Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman has suggested that those who deface freeways with graffiti should have their thumbs cut off on television.

Goodman, appearing Wednesday on the "Nevada Newsmakers" television show, said, "In the old days in France, they had beheading of people who commit heinous crimes.

"You know, we have a beautiful highway landscaping redevelopment in our downtown. We have desert tortoises and beautiful paintings of flora and fauna. These punks come along and deface it.

"I'm saying maybe you put them on TV and cut off a thumb," the mayor added. "That may be the right thing to do."

Goodman also suggested that whippings or canings should be brought back for children who get into trouble.

"I also believe in a little bit of corporal punishment going back to the days of yore, where examples have to be shown," Goodman said.

"I'm dead serious," said Goodman, adding, "Some of these (children) don't learn. You have got to teach them a lesson, and this is coming from a criminal defense lawyer."

"They would get a trial first," he added.

Another panelist on the show, Howard Rosenberg, a state university system regent, responded by saying that cutting off the thumbs of taggers won't solve the problem and Goodman should "use his head for something other than a hat rack."
I'm also going to try to avoid any public urination Smiley: eek

Fuck it, why stop there? May as well just kill them so they can't do it again. Same thing with the kids. Spitballs would get you a knife in the eye and a thumbtack on the teachers chair will get you beat to death with your own history textbook.

Smiley: disappointed

People like this need to wake up and notice that punishments like that only create more creative and more careful criminals.

I'm of the mind that having no opposable thumbs would make a huge dent in the problem. Considering how difficult it is to simply hold a spray paint can without thumbs, much less depress the button and make grafitti that doesn't resemble a stoned or drunk Jackson Pollock painting would be a remarkable feat indeed!

Methinks Mr. Rosenberg has been working in those academic halls for far too long to really grasp the difficulties inherent to living a nub-challenged lifestyle.

I love it when people bring up the whole corporal punishment for petty crimes angle or its intellectual equivalent of "why dont we just nuke the middle east" type argument.

It's moron code for "I am incapable of handling complex issues and seeing the source of the problem, so I will over react by using my wonderful mallet to bash a square peg into a round hole even though it defies all reason, logic and everything this great country I profess to love is about!"
