I'm going to post something pointless. Call it... a first for the Asylum.

Anywho. I live in Oak Ridge now. (City motto: "What Bomb??") I've only been here for a few weeks now, and this is only my second weekday here, since I don't work in Oak Ridge (playing hooky today). I got out around noon, and damn if they don't "test" the air-raid sirens right about then. I was actually looking up in the sky for a second there, heh.

Those bastards are loud, too. Smiley: frown

And there you have it. My useless, pointless post. Feel free to make it even more pointless!

I think the asylum could use an air-raid siren in the form of a sticky post that reads "BEWARE HERE BE DRAGONS and TROLLS!" beggars begone!

Or something like that.

Hey the town I live in does the 'noon' alarm too!

My guess of the purpose is this: It is a warning to all of the women-folk to get crackin' on lunch for the men. 5 mins, or they get the midnight discing duty in the corn field.

It's the only thing I could come up with so far.

The areas surrounding Crystal River in Florida have nuclear warning sirens - I suppose they're used in case of meltdown. I never liked those tests.

Similarly, I still find the sound of a firehouse alarm to be eerie at night.

Around here, it's 10am, first Tuesday of the month.

My house is across the street from a siren. When there's a bad storm, I think the decibels from the siren threaten my home more than the potential for a tornado does.

At 10am, on the first Tuesday of every month, Illinois tests its tornado sirens. One of them is less than a block from my apartment, and I don't have class until 1pm on Tuesdays.

Needless to say, I don't really need to set an alarm on those days.

I'm sure that's what these sirens are, too. But I'm kind of out of it today, so air-raid was the only thing that came to mind.

And I heard in the next expansion, all characters start at lvl 50 and you have all your spells already. Oh, and Jboots. And all characters have a cleric epic.

you guys have sirens?

The closest I could come to is where I work its located right in front of the firestation. Everyday at noon an 6 they blast their horn. It is so damn loud it will make your ears ring. Even when you know its coming, if you're outside when it goes off you will jump. And if you forget that its closing in on 6, you will jump and scream. I've seen grown men walking by jump and screech. I'd laugh at them but I', doing the same thing when that damn horn goes off

Yeah, but ours here are most likely a combo of air-raid/look-out-the-reactor-is-exploding kind.

My useless post:

What came first, the siren of mythology, or the siren of warning?

Mythology. They sang sailors to their deaths, actually; later they were mixed up with eldritch creatures like banshees, that screamed and wailed to warn of imminent danger.

1:00 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month we hear the sirens go off.

I always found "true north" to be the best spell to cheaply build the divination skill.
