... so be gentle. Never ventured into this area of Alla, but figured my rant was more appropriate here than on the gaming boards. With that said, I give you, 8 Dollar Coffee.

So my girlfriend is a nurse. She works in a neonatal intensive care unit here in Austin. I think it is an awesome job, and whenever I pop in to say hello, I make her show me the babies she takes care of. Cutest little guys you will ever see, but I digress.

She is addicted to Starbucks. I mean REALLY addicted. It's like crack for her, but since she works very hard and very long shifts, I let it slide. That is, until recently.

She has taken up the annoying habit of asking me to bring her a Starbucks (her words, not mine, I just ask for coffee) when she is working. Now this in and of itself may seem rather harmless. Allow me to demonstrate the true evil nature of this event.

Her work is 12 miles from where we live together. The closest Starbucks is 2 miles past that in downtown Austin. So round trip, I drive a total of 16 miles. At $2.60 a gallon, that adds up.

Now luckily the car we drive gets 16 mpg city, so my math was made easier.

So to start we have $2.60 for just the drive.
Now we add in the $4.17 it costs for me to buy her a non-fat iced white mocha. That I have to buy from the pimply face pseudo-hippy guy and the ratty haired girl behind the counter who are sitting there thinking "What a ***** this guy must be, drinking non-fat iced white mochas" Oh and can't forget the dollar it costs to park in the hospital garage.

This all giving me a grand total of $7.77 (ooh guess 7 isn't so lucky after all) for one cup of coffee. Round up for you math fanatics and we get 8 bucks.

Do this 3 times a week, and we are looking at 12 runs a month, draining 96 dollars a month on Starbucks alone. Jesus Christ, that's a good days work.

Of course, none of this is factoring in the traffic I have to deal with driving through downtown Austin and dodging college kids going to class. Or the looks I get when I walk into Starbucks with my daughter on my hip and my son in tow. Putting an unforgivable smudge on their beautiful little shop with my semblance of (the horror!) a normal family.

New addition to my list of **** to blow the **** up, every Starbucks I happen to come across. Seeing as how there is somewhere around 8,467 of them in Austin alone, this may take me awhile. In the meantime, I gotta get her hooked on Folgers and a coffee maker.

I'm off to see if Episode 3 is any good now.

Girlfriend from aforementioned post bought it for me since she knows I like Star Wars......

Now we see if it goes on the shelf, or becomes a nifty coaster.

so you're complaining about the cost of doing something nice for your GF instead of thinking how much she probably really appreciates the fact you are willing to indulge her treat?

Buy her the coffee, some non-fat milk, and whatever flavor shot she needs. Have her prepare it herself using a regular coffee pot - I daresay they're standard equipment for a hospital, but if by some freak chance there's none at her place of business, buy her a small one to takein.

The drink won't be frothy and it won't come in a cute cup with a Starbucks logo, but it will still be tasty. It will also be less than one third the cost with no driving required.

She'll lose the Starbucks Experience. You'll save money. Problem solved.

C'mon, DSD. There's a difference between a nice indulgence and a budget line-item.

Oh the fringe benefits are great, was more a roundabout rant on Starbucks in general.

Greetings and salutations Filterspawn, you have the bodhi stamp of approval. (Not a sock, he is actually a quite involved and helpful poster over in the World of Warcraft forums).

I didnt say he was Asylum worthy, its just hat most of the time you see posts like this its a sock/troll/ratebot or someone looking to stir up ****.

We seldom get helpful and constructive posters saying "hey I think I am going to start in the asylum".

Whether he is asylum worthy is still left to be seen but his new player sticky in the wow forums as well with his other posts are all straightup good material.

Not really. She is working in a job that can be very hard and taxing. She's dealing with newborns. That alone can tire you out. It's not like shes asking for a whole bunch of stuff. Shes asking for one type of coffee, something I can understand.

Have you thought about getting her a smaller size instead of thelargest they got? That alone can save you a buck or two. I myself find Startbucks to be insanely expensive, but if you can lower the size it might hurt your poacket less. besides, the fact that you are willing to do this says alot to her and Im sure she undoubtedly realizes the hassle you go through for her. Im pretty safe in saying she really appreciates it.

Stop counting the money you are spending and take into consideration that its pittance compared to the message you're sending to your love and she knows it. A gesture like this is worth more than $92 a year its eating up.

psst ... its 92-96 per month or $1,104-$1,152 per year and then that varies depending on the price of gas and other variables.

That's freaking expensive for coffee, just buy her a bag of the beans from Starbucks, its about 9-10 bucks a bag, should last ya a good 2-3 weeks at least. Or pre-ground if no grinder in the area, still a money saver either way.

As others have mentioned, get her a coffee pot...

Tell your girlfriend to drive across town and buy her own fuc[/b]king coffee.

Seriously, it's not about the coffee. It's about her being able to tell her friends in the breakroom that her boyfriend drives halfway across the city to wait on her twice a week. If you intend to make this relationship longterm, and I assume you are since shes living with you, now would be a great time to start lengthening that leash

It's $96 a month. That's a cable bill with premium channels or a phone bill or 1/20th of a heating bill come this winter.

TXU Energy went up 24% on electricity yesterday, another price hike is coming up in January, still fails to compare to the natural gas expense you mid-westerner's are facing.

/salute you troopers.

I get her the coffee, but charge her $9 for it when you deliver. If she doesn't pay, dump it on the floor in front right in front of her feet.

That will show her, and you'll be the hero!
