Celtic New Year. Halloween is kind of like the Caltic version of New Years Eve

I thought Samhein was the same day as Halloween, October 31st. Maybe I need to brush up on my obscure Celtic Holidays. Smiley: frown

Nope, it's today. All Saints and Dia de los Muertos are pretty much the same thing, since most of us treat our dead like saints, pray to them and the like.

I thought Samhain was the shortest night? Or is that the one after? Smiley: confused

Out here, where the celebrants of Dia de los Muertos are mainly Mexican and Central American nationals or immigrants, the celebration is actually two days. Today is the Dia de los Angelitos, the children. Tomorrow is for the grownups.

I like the festival, personally. It's one of the nicest ways of dealing with death I've seen.

Too bad with all those holidays floating around, we couldn't get a day off from work. But Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving are right around the corner.

Nope the shortest night would be the summer solstice I believe.Samhein is the opposite of Beltaine, or May Day ( my birthday)

Samhein is the celebration of the harvest for Druids. It is the original stem of the magic concept of Halloween. It's got nothing to do with a new year.

Samhien (Druids)>>Roman Celebration of the Goddess Cornoma(Or somthing very similar, not Ceres however)>>Christain all Saints Day to celebrate the souls of the dead. Children would go from house to house taking small cakes and in exchange promished to pray for the dead of that house. This was known as all Hallow's day, on Nov 1st. The trick or treating took place beforehand on Oct 31, All Hallows even, which was shortened to Hallow'een, and then Halloween.

There! Mini-history.

The origin of Halloween dates back 2000 years ago to the Celtic celebration of the dead. A Celtic festival was held on November 1, the first day of the celtic New Year

Quote:
Popular beliefs trace this day to the Roman harvest festival of Pomona and to Druidism. The ancient Celts called this day Samhain (pronounced Sow-wan), which meant the end of summer (nowadays, with our year divided into four parts, it means the end of autumn), the beginning of winter, and the Celtic New year.

Thanks, DSD Smiley: smile

I'm still recovering from the festivities, I started on Friday with a win for the most creative costume. It's amazing how muggles react to Rennies in full garb. I used the horsehair flail on the judges. Was fun wearing my garb home on the bus.

Jonwin and I went to our favorite Irish Pub and once again was on the winning Trivia Contest team. We haven't had to paid for a meal there for the last few weeks. Well my father refused to let us use our winnings to paid for our meal Saturday, since Jonwin supplied the tickets to see King Lear. I'm going to have to come up with more reasons to take my father out on the town, if he wants to pay for meals.

My garb now has to be cleaned and repaired for next year's Ren Faire and Samhein.
