LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- George Takei, who as helmsman Sulu steered the Starship Enterprise through three television seasons and six movies, has come out as a homosexual in the current issue of Frontiers, a biweekly Los Angeles magazine covering the gay and lesbian community.

Like this would suprise anyone. Hell, I figured he was gay and I'm usually oblivious to things like that.

Maybe your gaydar is getting more honed? And what's with that guys picture? Do single-character actors completely adopt that role for the rest of their lives?

Wonder how the Trekky community will take this? Mass Suicides or was Sulu considered a Hack?

What do you expect, they did not have a Princess Leha to fantasise over so they turned to Captian Kirk and Spock...

I think that discovering George Takei is gay, like it really mattered for his role because he was sort of the secretary for the USS Enterprise, is about as surprising as when Rob Halford of Judas Priest came out.

I'm confused, I thought George Takei being was really old news, like 1990's old news. I'm not being a smart ***, it's just that I thought it was already out that he was gay.

Been a long time since I was involved in the Trekkie community, but I doubt anyone cares--I seem to recall a lot of people who simply assumed Brent Spiner was gay. But maybe the old school gang might freak out a bit.

Like the sequence in Star Trek 3, where Sulu is using his mighty Karate skills to beat the snot out of a big burly red shirt didn't clinch it...

In particular watch for the flippant jacket twirl over the shoulder. It's pretty darn obvious.

The gay community has known this for a long time. Then again, subcultures have a way of seeming rather small-townish in that regard.

I'm an old school trekker. No, they will not be shocked. One of the things people admired about the series was their supposed liberalism and social forward thinking.

You know what did shock me that I saw in the article? The fact that he's 68! He looks fabulous!

And yes, the little cape flip moment I swear was a wink to everyone in "the family".

Unless I'm mistaken, it was a tan leather jacket. Also, if you didn't know before, you certainly knew then.

First I heard of it. Mildly amusing.

Sort of redefines the phrase, "To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before" now, doesn't it?
