Wandering through the grocery last night, I was looking for something to bring with me to work for a snack as I generally don't eat lunch. As I meandered around the various aisles and end-caps, I eventually came upon an unassuming box with the cover closed and no sign nearby which would indicate it's contents. Of course this is an open invitation to investigate further.

Opening this box revealed a layer of completely untouched, unblemished, and perfectly ripe figs. As any foodie would know, this is a rather rare occurence in your average supermarket. Hastily, yet carefully, I bag up a couple handfuls and depart on my merry little way.

That got me to thinking though. The fig is quite possibly one of the most underated fruits that I know of. It's quite tasty, very nutritious, and convenient to boot. Most Americans, I'd assume, are only familiar with the fig in it's Newton form and this is truly a shame. So go out and try a fig.

yep, I'm bored and nobody else is posting anything. Eat a fig and like it *****.

I feel the same way about Kumquats, in fact I feel one can never say the word 'Kumquat' enough.

Go ahead walk up and say 'Kumquat' to a co-worker or a total stranger.

So that's a Kumquat?

I always thought it was slang to mean "Korean Prostitute".

I'm not a fan of figs. Have had several fig trees over the years, though. I like the way they look when properly groomed. Plus, nothing like a good fermented fig to set birds aflying into solid objects.

Kumquats ARE quite good. My grandpa has somewhere around 20 of em planted out back. I try to raid them every year if possible when I go down. My parents have 2 in their yard. I try NOT to raid those when I go down; it nets me a few dirty looks when I'm caught doing it anyway.
