Amid comparisons to the mistreatment of prisoners at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison, a City Council committee agreed Tuesday to ban the sale of the liver delicacy known as foie gras in Chicago restaurants.

If the full Council follows the Health Committee's lead, Chicago would join the state of California and a host of countries that have already banned the pricey appetizer. They include the United Kingdom, Denmark, Switzerland, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Luxembourg, Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic and Israel.

Famed Chicago chef Charlie Trotter has already stopped serving foie gras, and more than 100 other Illinois restaurants have signed similar pledges. Ald. Joe Moore (49th), who proposed the Chicago ban, estimated that "not more than a dozen" local restaurants still serve it.

"It'll mean that there will be fewer restaurants serving this product and, hence, fewer ducks and geese being tortured to create this product," said Moore, who has been ridiculed in some circles for trying to ban a food that most Chicagoans have never tasted.

"Chicago is in the nation's heartland. It's not known as a city that passes, without considerable thought and deliberation, ordinances of this nature. It'll encourage other legislative bodies to consider similar measures."

Mmmmm...fois gras.

Yeah, they've been kicking that bit o' legistlation around for about six months now I think. Of course, I'm in the 99.97% who've never had and never intend to have the stuff so I can't complain.

That said, I'm not sure it's really something that needed to be banned or that said ducks and geese ultimately have it any tougher than any other animal used for food or clothing. I've heard the descriptions of the technique and all that but mass commercial food production in general is a pretty icky practice.

So I'm not 100% that it needed to be done but it's not something I care enough about to fight against. I'll have to risk the slippery slope that tomorrow we'll be banning hot dogs and grilled cheese sandwiches.

Wow. Score one for.. for.. actually ***** that, this is one of the stupider things I've heard of - it ranks right up there with Congress and their "freedom fries" bs.

At least you can still get escargot.

It was actress Loretta Swit of MASH and "Hot Lips" fame who made the prison comparison.

Way to reaffrim the blonde stereotype. Woudldn't it be more effective to ban chicken livers at KFC?

MMmmm. Chicken livers.

Aren't those one and the same? You know you've had a hell of a diverse career when people have to name both your show and your character to make it sound like you've done more than one thing.

What about that one movie she was in with the Christmas pagent??

I've had escargo once, it was pretty tasty. I can't say I've ever had foie gras though.

Loretta Swit has clearly gone nuts.

Escargo tastes like buttery rubber. Minus the butter sauce, I can only assume it just tastes like rubber.

When the barnyard fowl revolution comes, the restauranteers will be first up against the wall!

Sauteed Fois Gras tastes more savory than steak drippings.

It's more addictive than bacon.

Try it sometime.

Eh? Foie gras has not been banned in the United Kingdom.

And foie gras is perhaps the most delicious thing that comes on a plate. My mouth is watering at the very thought of it.

Edit - I should at least spell it right, if I love it so much

I love how Loretta 'Hot Lips' Swit, stood up in front of city council and compared the practices used to fatten geese up, to be on a planar level with the abuses carried out in Abu Ghraib.

Yeah, force feeding geese for a French delicacy really does make me think of Lyndie England and the horrors of stacking hooded Iraqi prisoners for games of naked pyramid and some light S&M.

The only abuse that I can see, is what Ms. Swit's plastic surgeon has done to 'Hot Lips' face.

Ohhh the horror.

I'm still trying to find a link to the photograph that is in the Sun Times paper of Swit.

Ahem I mean Swit, and I stand corrected.

I checked a few top end restaurant websites. Still on the menu.

It's pretty hard getting the tube down a goose throat, until you get the knack.

Dude, I totally told you all!!

A River North restaurant was vandalized overnight, just hours after its owner testified against a proposed city ordinance banning the sale of foie gras in Chicago.

"I think it's not a coincidence," said Didier Durand, chef and owner of Cyrano's Bistro, 546 N. Wells St.

The incident happened sometime after the last employee closed the French bistro and went home at 11 p.m. Tuesday and about 9:30 a.m. today, when another worker showed up to open the restaurant.

The employee found a broken window, a red blood-like substance on the door and along the sidewalk, and lattices and flower boxes in front of the cafe destroyed.

Police consider the case "criminal damage to property," said Officer Patrice Harper, a police spokeswoman. She said she had no further details on the investigation and did not know if anyone had taken responsibility for the attack.

Durand said he has been serving the delicacy made from the livers of geese and ducks for years and had even force-fed ducks himself as a child in France.
