I'm guessing, because you're going to be inundating the forums with some more socks and ratebots?

DO NOT BUY COMPUTERS FROM THE CLASSIFIEDS!

99% of the time you're getting ripped. Those computers are old junk. And you can almost always get a computer that's 2-10x faster for the same price.

that would be a perfect setup for an http://ipcop.org IPCop firewall router. just add 2 NICs and away you go.

Actually the new one is solely for the purpose of homework and when I upgrade the hardware a little and get a couple 80gb Hard Drives it'll be solely for Video Editing. No internet will be installed on my new soon to be editing computer. Even with upgrades it'll cost me maybe a total of $500 where a good editing computer bought new would have been close to $1000.

which means you have to replace the motherboard, processor, RAM, pretty much everything...why waste the original $80?

maybe a little of that but the editing is going to be there mainly for the fact that I'm going into video editing when I go to college.

You're wasting your money. You'll get more out of your processor than anything else for video editing.

You can get a brand new Celeron 1.2G for $500. If you're planning on spending money on upgrades you might as well buy all the parts and get them now. Your motherboard might not even allow the upgrades you want. This means you'll spend another $100+ just for a motherboard. Trust me, you're wasting your time and money.

You might want to look into it before you do. They might be on a mac editing system.

Also realize you're going to spend at least $100 on software and that's extremely low end. I would save the money and use the school labs. Use the money to buy some high volume portable hard drives. You're shooting yourself in the foot both financially and educationally.

I hate dell, and I will continue to hate Dell until they sell their fucking computers in a fucking store.

I would have bought a good computer that wasnt total **** like the one I bought, but at this point, even $80 was a stretch for me.

If $80 is a stretch why are you wasting it on junk?

And who said anything about Dell?

Apparently the college here uses the highest quality windows editing program(i forget the name) they can afford for windows.

For college I will mainly use the school labs but I need the computer for purposes other than school. For example, me and a few friends are making a promotional video for my high school and we have to use our own software and most of our own equipment(lighting(and any extra cameras we might need) is supplied by the school) and for now we're using my friend's editing computer for it.

Well Dell, Compaq, Gateway, whatever. Point being you would have been better off saving your money. Jumping the gun and buying a PII was not a good decision, but it is a good lesson in life. Sometimes you might be better served in the longrun by going without a bit and saving.

Now you're just trying to justify the money you spent; my guess is you're trying to justify it to yourself far more than to anyone posting here.

Suck it up and admit that one of the platitudes you often hear is mostly true: You get what you pay for.

My advice: save your money until you actually NEED a PC for video editing before you buy one or throw any more money into the doorstop you bought. Then buy something that meets your need.

If you actually want it, you can get the $$ to have a good PC by the time you hit college. Or you can just say you want it and not save the money. Your choice, do what you want.

HE just got a TOP OF THE LINE computer for about $1500 with a 160gb hard drive and a 80 gb hard drive and he has his top of the line last year laptop computer. The desktop uses Avid Express DV. And the laptop has Pinnacle Studio 10. I'm not sure exactly of the specifics of his hardware such as processor, etc.

edit: we're only using the laptop on location, all the files get transferred to his PC at home.

The top of the line computer would cost more than $1500.

Go to his computer and click on the start button. Click on 'Run' and type in dxdiag in the box and click ok. This will bring up a window with tabs along the top. The first window is the operating system and processor ram etc. Write those down and also click on the video tab. Give me the processer, ram, memory, harddrive info. Also get the video card info. Come back and post it.
