Some advice for the guysFollow

#1 Oct 21 2005 at 9:51 AM Rating: Decent
I got my girlfriend a PSP as an early birthday gift (she was always staring at the Zen Micros and stuff at Frys everytime we went). Last night, we got Lumines and she has become completely cracked out on the game.

Long story short, it's an MP3 player/Movie player/AWESOME game machine and I can't even begin to describe the clarity of the screen. With the updates she can even connect to our wireless home network and browse the web with the thing in our living room.

It is possibly the best gift I have ever given anyone and she is as happy as a clam with the thing. So, I just wanted to give everyone the heads up on a great gift idea in case you're wondering what you're going to do with the holidays creeping up or an important birthday. Now, I just have to get one for myself! I had no idea they were so effkin cool!

Yes, PSPs do kick a serious amount of ***. Be sure to get a good memory stick though, I forgot to do that and the shop has been out of stock for ages. (so many .avis and nothing to store them on!)

This is the one thing I wish was different about my SO. She doesn't play video games. O-well, I still get to play them at least. In certain ways I like being the only one to play video games though, as it has become my alone time. Halo 2 serves as a nice escape.

I've actually seen a few commercials for movies that are coming out on DVD and PSP. It's wierd that they don't even release them on VHS anymore.

/mourn my Mel Brooks VHS collection

Which is a shame because VHS tapes are a bit more resiliant for the kids than DVDs. Luckily, mine is old enough to treat a DVD with some care but, when he was younger, that large plastic shell was a good thing.

Yeah, the UMDs are actually pretty good. I was surprised when I watched the sample videos that came with the package. It's literally like watching an LCDTV in your hands. If you haven't seen the PSP in action, then its just something you have to see to believe.

I definitely want to get some UMD movies now. There's a logitech case for the PSP that doubles as a stand if you just want to lay down and watch a movie with the thing. Not too shabby I must say.

The only thing that really sucks on the original PSP games...the load times. Manufacturers still haven't figured out a viable way to keep them down, though there have been some improvements. I played Midnight Club on my friend's PSP and the load time from screen to screen was around 2-3 minutes. I hear Tiger Woods 2005 is around 5 minutes per hole.

Also, some advice for you Lefein: get a protective case ASAP. The screens scratch very easily. When you put the cover on, try to get into a room with as little dust as possible. There is nothing worse then having dust under the protective case.

Eh, she's OCD, so she'll carry the terry-cloth with her wherever she goes anyways. I am getting the logitech case armor though, so the screen will be protected when not in use.

Here's some better advice for the guys....don't always buy your girlfriend something that you think is cool. Make sure you buy her something that she thinks is cool.

She has been staring at MP3 players everytime we go to Fry's for the last month at least. He shoots, he scores! She couldn't stop playing with it even during our lunch break :)

Her exact words were "Lumines is digital crack!!"

I think Neph's saying that not EVERY girl out there is going to appreciate a gift having to do with games and such. Most like clothing, jewelry, etc.

There is no "universaly awesome" gift. Every girl has her own taste.

True that, but I know iPods are the big rage and all too. I thought the iPod Video was going to be tha shizzle, but it only has a dinky 2.5" screen. The PSP has a 4.5" screen and it's very easy to convert video formats for it if you have the right software. So, although I didn't flat out state it, I'm basically saying:

PSP > iPod Video

and not by any short margin, either. Steve Jobs himself said the PSP was going to cost $500 before it's price was announced. It's a great deal and it's a great gift. How many girls do you know don't like music, movies, videos, AND videogames? I certainly wouldnt date such a curmudgeon.

edit: Oh yeah, and watching video on the iPod will cut its battery time down to two hours..

My husband got his PSP the day it launched. He came by my work to show it to me and I was hooked on it. As soon as I got off work, I ran over to the store, bought one and brought it home. And I've been cracked on Lumines myself ever since. Graphics are awesome, you get music, movies. Only complaint is having to be so so careful in not getting the screen scratched.

I don't have any kids yet, but I've already made it a point to make copies of all our DVDs so that when the day comes that the kidlets arrive, we can lock away the originals and use the copies, thus the amount of damage inflicted by the ankle-biters is irrelevent.
