Where did you get a link to that? It's an old certificate. The new one is at https://seal.verisign.com/splash?form_file=fdf/splash.fdf&dn=SECURE.ALLAKHAZAM.COM&lang=en

Nevermind. I see it. Illia will need to fix the link on the word secure. He updated the graphic and missed that one. Thanks for pointing it out.

Just a word on these certificates, since this amazed me when I learned it. None of these companies actually verifies that you are secure. All they verify is that you are a legitimate company and not some fly by night setup. Verisign does not check anyone's servers and has no idea what our setup is to charge people. They just check to make sure you are actually registered where you say you are as a corporation. Personally I think it's kind of a scam. They charge us $200 a year to make a rudimentary check with the PA corporate bureau to make sure we are actually a PA LLC and then issue us a "secure" certificate. But without it your browser will pop up that we are not "certified", whatever that means.

Not that we need it, but the company that makes sure we are secure is Visa/MC. They won't let us charge things without meeting strict standards, and yet there is nothing saying we passed those. Go figure.

Just an FYI for those who are interested.

To follow up on what Allakhazam said: security wise - we are audited, every 3 months. Starting in June of this year (2005), the credit card companies established a set of guidelines for people processing payments called CISP (from visa, claled other things by other companies). We are CISP compliant, and undergo audits once every 3 months.

If you are using a credit card federal law provides very specific and broad anti fraud protections. Essentially, you are generally only liable for the first $50 of fraudulant charges. On top of that most banks and card issuers offer additional security protections bringing your liability to $0.

You do not have to pay fraudulant charges, and you will not be charged interet or penalties for disputed charges after you notify your card issuer until the issue is resolved. Most banks will even raise your credit limit the same amount of the charge while the investigation is ongoing to prevent any inconvenience to you.

DO NOT USE A DEBIT CARD for online purchases, while the laws for credit cards are very clear, debit cards are a little more murky, many banks and card issuers offer similar protections to credit cards but their obligation by law is much less. Furthermore, many banks will not refund the disputed charge to your checking account while they investigate it. Meaning, unlike a credit card you are without that money until the investigation is resolved, which could be several months

Very helpful xythex, I had no idea that using a debit card had different rules that CC's.

I'll definitely be using my CC online now.

If you can make payments online just make the purchase and then pay it off.

To keep things in scale 99% of all credit/debit transactions go through without issue. You are more likely to have someone swipe your reciept off the table at the restaurant and copy the numbers off of there than get ahold of them online. It's just who's money do you want to be disputed when that 1% comes up on you, yours or the banks?
