Cafe Du Monde ReopensFollow

#1 Oct 19 2005 at 8:27 AM Rating: Good

Being a southern girl, I am a huge fan of New Orleans. I visit regularly, I honeymooned there, someday I want to live there (at least for a few years). That being said, the hurricane really upset me on almost a personal level.

So I was watching the morning news, and the Cafe Du Monde (home of the french quarter cafe au lait and beignet doughnut) reopened today. In live video feed I saw, it was busy! I keep having these images in my mind of a vacant, desolate New Orleans, but that place was hoppin'. Reopening tourism will be a good thing for the city. I had no idea they had come that far already.

One of my ex-bosses went there once and brought me some coffee and beignet dough mix. It was stomach-hole-punchin' good.

Never heard of that place. But then, it doesn't sound like they serve booze or have strippers, so I probably never walked into the place.

Ahhhh, the lost days of my reckless youth...

Nah, they don't. It is the place you go at 4am after you have had too many hand grenades and blown your money on lap dances.

In that case, I may have been there and just don't remember it.

Some of the best beignets in the Quarter and they also make a great chickory coffee.

Not a bad place to start the morning.

This one's better though:

I have never been there. I searched around on the net and still can't quite place it *shrug*. Cafe Du Monde is just such a staple, and so cheap. My husband and I would eat breakfast there every morning for 6 bucks. Of course, if you want to really discuss what is better, try Brennan's for an excellent, but pricey, breakfast. It's owned by the same family that owns many restaurants in NO, including Commander's Palace (but there is some sort of feud there and they don't speak, only sort of connected). We ate there once on our honeymoon, and returned to the bar many, many, many times for brandy milk punch in to-go cups. Yummmmm. Talk about a great way to start the morning.

Du Monde is incredible, and so is Brennan's, but I always loved to eat at 'The Court of Two Sisters'. Hopefully all these places will be around next time I go down there.

I have been told to go to the Court of Two Sisters, but it keeps not happening. Not necessarily to eat, but for cocktails. I always end up at the Napoleon House for cocktails. I have heard from someone who would know that Brennan's survived without damage, and only lost one or two trees in their courtyard.

This is making me want to go down there very badly.

Edit: I made this post before I saw Elderon's post, so I did not know where the conversation might be going before I made that last statement.

Hey ya'll, thanks for your concerns and thoughts. I'm from New Orleans, recently moved to Baton Rouge, and it is a great thought to see that the cafe has opened. You know, that place had been open for over 150 years, and it was the first time it had been closed for that long.

The city is decimated. Over 50,000 homes must be destroyed because of water damage and mold, and we more than likely will lose the Saints and the Hornets to San Antonio and Oklahoma City (respectively). It will be hard to get the city back the way it was, because there is so much garbage, and filth. They say that anywhere from 100 to 400 thousand people will not return to New Orleans, and as of recently, the state of Louisiana has reported over 460,000 new cases of unemployment in a state that had only 9 million people.

Luckily, I have a good computer with me where I am, so I can happily play FFXI to bide my time.

Oh, and by the way, if you are able to get back to NOLA (as we like to call it), check out Mother's and Commander's Palace on Tchopitoulas (in the CBD, or Central Business District).

Ohh my god, I would kill for some coffee au lait from the Cafe'.

The thought of Mothers makes my mouth water! I have great memories of living in NO. I was glad that on my last trip there, I could see some improvement in the city, and some spark back into the people.

My government contract is up on 11/15, so the next time I return it will be as a tourist!! Those of with pleasant memories of NO will help the locals regain the charm of the city.

well, here in Baton Rouge, at the Mall they have a Cafe Du Monde, but of course, it isnt the gritty feel that you get from the original. However, they have the same recipes, and the same prices. It's nothing to replace the original, but it certainly is a good substitute.

You talking about having cocktails there is just icing on the cake baby. Smiley: grin
