Which sucks, 'cause this is how I earn my living now. Any good fast-acting home remedies? I need to be back at it tommorrow, and no health insurance, so it needs to be something I can get over-the-counter.

Whiskey! And lots of it, followed immediately by a trip to my house. Smiley: grin

Maybe Echineachea could work too? It's not nearly as sexy though. I believe that liquid form is the preferred method of ingestion for sore throats.

Edit for spelling...

You don't want this plague. Coughing, sinuses all messed up, red nose... Not sexy.

Half a teaspoon of salt in a 12oz glass of water. Stir it up then gargle with it.

If you glads are swollen get a warm damp washcloth and lay back with the washcloth over you neck.

Learned that from my sister's singing coach. If that doesn't help, go see a doctor cause its more than just strain of the vocal cords.

It's ok, we can just turn out the lights.

Now, on to this lost voice thing. Did you just wake up like that or did it happen progressively? Are you sick, like a cold or flu, temp?

Whiskey wasn't too far off....with honey and lemon, warm. As far as over the counter, theraflu is a really really great product. I also like cepacol throat drops, if a sore throat is a problem. They really numb you up.

Tea and chicken soup! Hope you feel better.

Did this last night, and it didn't do a thing for me except make my throat hurt. Then again, the water was only lukewarm.

First off, sleep as much as you can and drink as much water as you can stand. Do not talk to anyone if you can help it.

Your day should look like this:

Gargle with salt water, drink a glass of water with a vitamin, go to bed.

Get up, eat some soup or something else healthy, gargle with salt water, drink a glas of water, go to bed.

Get up, eat some soup...etc, etc, go to bed.

A tablespoon of honey every now and then over the course of the day will help your throat as well. Let it coat your throat as it goes down and don't drink anything for a couple minutes.

I hope you feel better hon!

Sounds like it's caused by nasty sinus drainage. Had that happen last year to me. Not really a cold, just all the symptoms when the seasons changed.

Try Sudafed. First step is to treat the cause. Then alleviate the symptoms.

Chicken soup never hurt anyone, either. Take it easy, don't talk unles syou have to, stay well hydrated.

I doubt you'll get your voice back in a day.

I'd still hit it, Rudolph.

Oh, and if the sore throat is being caused by post-nasal drip, get an antihistamine (read the box). A decongenstant won't do crap if you're not congested in the first place. Keep in mind though that antihistamines dry you up, so you MUST drink more water or you'll never get your voice back!

If you're reading this, you should be in bed!

Progressive. For a couple of days throat's been sore, then yesterday woke up with clogged sinuses and sniffled all day, then later in the day felt like sinuses and throat stuffed with cotton and started coughing very lightly. When I went to bed last night, voice was a croak. Today is throaty whisper. No fever at any point.

So far I've taken sinus pills, some dayquil and vitamin C.

Last thing, I swear! Try NOT to sniffle, try to blow your nose even if it's annoying. When you sniffle, all that **** backs up into your throat and makes the throat worse. Blow your nose even if you think it's going to fall off. I recommend the Puffs Plus with lotion.

You can tell I've gotten a few colds, eh? haha

Hmmm. I have all these things. Maybe a cocktail....

Thanks, girl. Part of my problem is I HATE LOATHE DESPISE sleeping the day away. I'll make sure not to exert myself, but usually when I'm sick I just ignore it and wait for it to go away and in most cases, it does. Imagine my surprise. *****-*** cold. Smiley: mad

I'm with the honey and lemon. Worked great for when we were yelling all the time and loosing our voices. Just a spoon full of sugar and some lemon juice and swallow. I've heard high praise for Olive Oil used in the same manner.

Then again, the salt and hot water thing has worked for me as well. I'm also sure listerene couldn't hurt so long as you don't swallow it.

Good luck.

Yay! I took Tylenol Sinus about a half-hour ago (It's both decongestant and antihistamine), and already my head feels less cumbersome. My trusty water bottle is almost empty. Four more of these to go!

Believe me, I'm not doing crap today. Sleeping too much makes my head hurt.

some other stuff....

Double wrapped then?

On the nose blowing, if you must do so, do it gently. Blowing your nose too hard puts a lot of pressure on your sinuses and can actually make make things worse or cause infection.

I can attest to the power of Theraflu, it's worked great for me every time.

I know, I'm with you there, I can't stand taking naps. However, when I'm sick, I take something with an antihistamine which has the nice side effect of causing drowsiness (switch to Nyquil, Dayquil doesn't have an antihistamine...that's why it's non-drowsy).

If you really can't sleep, try taking a long, hot bath. The humid air will be more gentle on your throat and the hot water will help relax achey muscles. And drink lots of water, herbal tea, juice, etc. Stay away from sugar!

Now that sounds great. My only regret is that i got a kick-*** blowout last night and no mileage out of it. Oh well. I guess it's one of those pyjama-wearin', tv-watchin' veg days.

Heh, I am the same way. On a normal day at work or school, I will be sleepy and wish I was at home napping. But if I am really sick and should be in bed, nothing can keep me there. I almost tend to be more active when I am sick. Strange, I am.

there' s not much I can add that these folks didnt already. They've got you covered pretty well. Make sure you keep yourself hydrated, esp with hot drinks such as tea and soup. Rest up, don't talk, and try not to think about it.

Flea, go get Mucinex and some numbing throat spray. Do the HOT water and salt thing as well before the spray. Take TWO mucinex up front and drink plenty of water, as this stuff will dry you up.

Mucinex will clear up the snot, which makes you lose your voice and makes ya cough. They have two dif ones, one with expectorant, and one with expectorant/decongestant. The latter raises BP, just in case you needed to know that.

Rest until you have to go, and it also wouldn't hurt to try one of those new sudafed things, they have one that is a plug in and one you can toss in the shower while you cleanse.

Keep with the chicken soup, no caffeine or alcohol (nyquil if you are desperate) and don't get dehydrated. Continue Echinacaea and vitamins. C and Zinc are important atm. They make cough drops with those in them and they taste great, Ricola IIRC.

Last resort, whiskey, lemon juice & honey... one shot and my throat was always cleared up. Gramma used to give me that until I finally had to have my tonsils removed.

If I think of anything else I will be back.

Instead of salt, I gargle with aspirin dissolved in hot water (let it cool to warm before you gargle). Either one should help take down the swelling in your throat, but aspirin has the advantage of being an analgesic as well.

Otherwise what everyone else has said. Don't watch too much daytime TV, though. Drinking rots fewer brain cells.
