Even better, let murderers and other felons also be put under similar watch. They deserve it just as much, if not more so.

Forgive me, I don't see murderers and rapists as people who upheld the constitutional rights of their victims, and as such shouldn't be protected by them. I don't care if that mindset makes me a pubbie or a dem (a pox on both your houses), but that is my opinion.

Recidivism of Sex Offenders Released from Prison in 1994

Presents, for the first time, data on the rearrest, reconviction, and reimprisonment of 9,691 male sex offenders, including 4,295 child molesters, who were tracked for 3 years after their release from prisons in 15 States in 1994. The 9,691 are two-thirds of all the male sex offenders released from prisons in the United States in 1994. The study represents the largest followup ever conducted of convicted sex offenders following discharge from prison and provides the most comprehensive assessment of their behavior after release.

Highlights include the following:

Within 3 years following their release, 5.3% of sex offenders (men who had committed rape or sexual assault) were rearrested for another sex crime.

On average the 9,691 sex offenders served 3 1/2 years of their 8-year sentence.

Compared to non-sex offenders released from State prisons, released sex offenders were 4 times more likely to be rearrested for a sex crime.

The 9,691 released sex offenders included 4,295 men who were in prison for child molesting.

Yup, we really should just forgive and forget the buggers. After all, it's not like they'll reoffend.

I have one who lives just down the street from us. If I hadn't already known about him, I would have never quess from the level 3 map, as the pin pointing to my house covered his. They point to the wrong houses too.

I had to count the front sidewalks to find his house and then realized, the picture was taken long enough ago, that their car is parked on the front yard. Wasn't on blocks, but with white trash, it is was only a matter of time. Neigborhood Association called the city about the car few months ago and I haven't seen it in since.

I could have guessed the majority of the reaction would be "Hey, look at MY house!"

Well, really, it could have been "women who've had abortions" and while I wouldn't agree with it being up, I still would have looked just 'cause I'm nosy.

Not taking a position in terms of relative recidivism, but isn't this an incredibly misleading statement? I would like to think it's just incredibly poorly written, but I somehow doubt it.

Most criminals stick to a particular type of crime. This is like me saying that murderers are more likely to be rearrested for future murders then guys who were in jail for traffic violations...

How about comparing the rates of sex offenders commiting another sex offense to other criminals commiting whatever it is they commited the first time? So if you got arrested for check fraud, what percentage of guys got arrested for check fraud after serving a sentence? That's how you measure recidivism.

Oh. And I've got no sex offenders anywhere near my neighborhood. Gotta go quite a ways north past the fairgrounds to find one, and then quite a ways south past the mall to find another. Not a bad deal...

I think the sex offender registry is a useful thing, but they need to stop putting people on it like 18 year old guys whose 17 year old girlfriends' dads got all out of control and called the cops on them. That's happened a couple of times here in MI.

Ain't it, though? When I zoom in on Google's satellite photo of my folks' house, I can see the pool in the backyard.

As a general rule, the majority of sex offenders are white males between the ages of 30 and 45. So basically if you live in the suburbs you're screwed.

Murderers have the lowest recidivism rate, actually. The percentage of murders committed by repeat offenders (gang members, hit men, whatever) is vanishingly small compared to the number committed by spouses and significant others, for example.

Another possible factor is that murderers tend to spend longer in prison and/or to receive a death sentence. So unless they re-offend in prison, they're not going to have as much of a chance to backslide.

Sex offenders are proportionately more likely to re-offend, and to eventually get caught. Why? Because their crime gets them hot, basically. Whether it's control/domination or whether they're sexually attracted to children or sexually obsessed with a single victim, this is what gets their juices flowing. They're more likely to get caught at some point because they leave witnesses. /shrug
