I hate McAfee virusscanFollow

#1 Oct 15 2005 at 7:20 AM Rating: Excellent
My subscription ran out so I followed options to update my antivirus.

Oh lord, what a mess.

McAfee have installed activex controls, rebooted my PC 3 times, crashed on install, killed my old version of the software AND left me without antivirus protection. Oh to boot, it asked me to turn off pop-up blocking .. Smiley: glare

I am trying to install their junk one more time before I cancel my order, demand a refund and install some other antivirus *screams*

How is it, that the anti-virus software seems more like a virus to me, than what it is supposed to stop?

I am asking all techies out there, is there an easy to install, no mess and easy antivirus program?

*screams* well now it installed ... and refuses to activate. My PC is left with no antivirus despite my just paying 40 pounds to renew it.

I have demanded a refund, I am disgusted.

I will look at norton, thank you weebs Smiley: smile

I just bought the norton pack Smiley: smile

Norton does not DEMAND you install through Microsoft Internet Explorer. It does not demand you allow pop ups. It does not crash your PC and reboot randomly. I like it so far ..

Thank you again Weebs, you are my hero Smiley: inlove

Symantec, the comapny that makes Norton AV seems to have their ***** well consolidated as of the past couple of years.

I use Symantec AV (basically same as Norton, but workplace bought mine 4 me) and haven't had a worry in the entire time I have had it on my PC.

Norton are wonderful. Its all installed and running without any hiccups on install and it required one reboot only. The firewall is a dream to use. The antivirus picked up 8 nasties on my PC that McAfee missed.

To McAfee Smiley: tongue

To Norton Smiley: inlove

Ya, I’m going with Norton myself when my subscription runs out...or Fry's has if Free after rebate again.

I have the McAfee Security Sweet and every couple of months it makes you verify your subscription online, for each application. Word of warning, their Privacy Manager is a total piece of crap.

EVERY time I had to verify, it disabled the Privacy Manager and since I couldn't sign in it wouldn't let me access the web to do the verification. Then to uninstall it wants to verify first. Call McAfee and no help cause their dB is down. Finally was able to trick the software and uninstall the Privacy Manager... everything else verified fine after that. No more renewing McAfee. I’m dropping the bastages for Norton when renewal time comes.

Yup, Norton all the way. It has it's own quirks, but it isn't anywhere near as annoying as Mcaffee, whcih I have had miss things in the past and will not use ever again.

The worst program I've ever seen is the Cox security suite. While it's great for finding viruses and spyware, simply having it installed reduces internet conuctivity by 50%, and the firewall features won't let you click on a lot of normal links.

I had Norton for a while, then decided it wasn't worth the money. I switched to AVG, but found it unsatisfactory. I switched to Panda Titanium AntiVirus, and friggin' loved it, but I can't pay for the subscription, so I got rid of it in favor of Avast! AV, which is free. Once I get to a point where I can subscribe for my AV services, I'm going back to Panda.

Im glad someone droped the Cox bomb. What a POS that is. I have never worked with something so horrible.. I had a EU call me ( i work in a computer repair call center....) and they told me that Cox told them to go into the registry and mess with stuff. WTF is with that?

Any way. yes Norton is #1 in the country (US) so....i think i will stick with it.

Comcast subscribers can get McAfee free, so I thought I'd give it a shot. What a POS. The thing that really annoyed me was the fact that it kept turning on MSN Messenger. I don't use that, don't want to use that either. And it didn't scan my email unless I used OE, and I use Thunderbird. AVG scans mail coming in through Thunderbird.

I've been pretty pleased with AVG so far. It doesn't seem to do have any quirks and even the free version seems to be well kept up to date.

I seem to think I downloaded AVG on a recommendation from Kao. Thanks!

I had nothing but problems with norton.

-Didn't find blatant viruses on my pc
-When it found, chose to ignore
-Scan took five bajillion years to complete

This was with everything up to date, I had the subscription and everything.

I've since switched to Yahoo! Online Protection. It isn't perfect, but it finds the stuff for me, and if it doesn't do anything about it, I can always reboot in safe and manually delete.

When I finally got my pc up and running, I had at least 10 different types of viruses on my pc. Norton did exactly jack **** about this.

At least Yahoo found them (even if it didn't delete).

IIRC that's powered by Etrust, which I've heard isn't bad.

If Norton wasn't catching stuff on your machine, you had it configured wrong or had problems already when it was installed. There are viruses that attack AV processes and if you have one of them it can be a bit painful to get rid of it if you've never been through the process before.

I had problems with McAfee after I bought it. I installed the entire suite. I had to uninstall, and customize it. I opted for antivirus, firewall, and spamkiller. No problems since and I've been running it for over a year now.

You want to know what the BEST AV is? Full system resotre every 3-6 months.
Go to the Microsoft website and look it up there.

Oh my god ..

So I sent E-mails to McAfee asking for a refund to have no reply.

So today, I called them which is expensive being an overseas call, but I wished to get my money back.

First question is "Hello ma'am, may I have your E-mail address please?".
So I reply "Jennifer<x>"

Then the CC rep decides that she cannot understand the name Jennifer and has no clue how to spell my name. I have to spell my name out letter by letter and she still gets it wrong 5 times. I then have to spell my surname 5 times till she gets it right. By this point I have lost my patience.
Now, I am asking all US citizens here, is Jennifer such an odd name that you would not recognise it or know how to spell it? Smiley: mad
Oddly she understood my customer reference number fine, but that was all numbers Smiley: rolleyes

Eventually, I get my refund, but only after they request I contact tech support, which I declined and had to put my foot down.

From now on, I try before I buy anything!!!
