NEW YORK - Meet Brian L. Roberts, dot-com master? Perhaps.

He's still merely the chief executive of Comcast (nasdaq: CMCSA - news - people )--not too shabby in itself, as it's the No. 1 U.S. cable TV operator. But according to reports Thursday, Roberts wants to join his firm with search-engine giant Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ), in a deal to nab a joint stake in Time Warner's (nyse: TWX - news - people ) America Online.

Scuttlebutt says the three firms would generate a new concern, through which they'd own the AOL Internet portal.

The supposed media/Internet/entertainment pact would coalesce just as markets boiled with reports of talks between AOL and Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ). Chairman Bill Gates' software colossus is widely held to want an alliance between AOL and its MSN Web portal. Also, consider this triangulation: Microsoft and Yahoo! (nasdaq: YHOO - news - people ) on Wednesday announced they were joining forces on instant messaging--a black eye for IM provider AOL.

More conglomerates, less competition, does this seem like a good idea for anyone? Wasn't the AOL-Time Warner merger a collosal failure?

I for one don't think it a great idea at all.

I have to leave 10-15 min early for work because of stupid people that don't know how to merge.

I can't think of Smed without thinking of Snidley K. Whiplash for some odd reason.

And come to think of it, we've never seen the two of them in the same room together, have we?
