Anyone found anything cool on Google Earth?

Pat mentioned their maps in another thread, but this rocks.

So far I've found all my family's houses and a few local neat things.

Discuss. Chop Chop!

Spent hours on that. Found Pryamids, Nazca Lines, the big Jesus statue in Rio, Stonehenge..but I couldn't find it.. couldn't find the Great Wall either..

The bombing damage in Iraq is interesting too.

Also followed some of the stratigic movements of Ceasar's armies in France as recorded in the Bello Gallico.

hours and hours

Pretty good pics of where I used to live in college and a view of a dumptruck that smashed a friends hand over Thanksgiving last year. I had to take his word that it was a dumptruck because it looked like a rather large blur parked at their house. They own it, and it has been parked there year round, so it showed up on the last Keyhole pass.

And kelvy wins...

I have determined that the images over my area were taken 7 years ago on a Sunday in June. Have looked at Niagara Falls, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Great Wall of China, my office, the Grand Canyon, and Area 51.

So no, not much really.

I posted a thread on this a while back also. I found interesting things too. I found my house and a couple friends houses. I also found my car.

If you look at anything the goverment doesn't want you to see, they sort of block it out. Try viewing the white house. Or try finding area 51.

Don't have much time for the web lately, but I suppose I'll play around with it sometime. Nazca lines? I'm all over it.

I dont know how often they update the maps but my area is still all woods and fields. And my neighborhood has been up for 7 years, my house specifically for 4.

I checked out all my old houses, schools, and my familys homes who live far away. Checked out the pyramids and the nile, and a couple other areas. It was pretty cool

I've used it to take a look at places I've gone snowboarding, and mountains I'd like to hit. Being able to tab around from mountain to mountain gives a fun comparison on runs.

Also nice for getting a better idea of the topo on longer backwoods hikes, or getting to see exactly where old hikes went.

... Japan makes me dizzy. Much too crowded.

Neener back atcha Brummie Boy.

All the UK streets are overlays on Google Earth if you check the box. And route-finding etc.

Trust me. Must've been invented by a Brit!

Well its been 2 work days since I downloaded this.

Saw Niagra Falls, Sydney Opera House, Magic Kingdom, Shamu, Epcot Center, the hotel I stayed at when I was in Florida, my house, half the people at my companies house, Panama Canal, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and Neveda. Yes Neveda. The entire state is filled with tons of military odds and ends.

Check out this LINK for posted "placemarks" of fun and unusal spots across the globe. T

Also in Layers Tab Click on the on the drop menu of Keyhole Community BBS and toggle what "Place Holders" you wanna view. Click Military and zoom in on Southern Nevada, insane the crazy shit going on there.

Area 51 is at Groom Lake at 37 14'26.36" N
115 48'28.98" W but you didn't hear that from me.

I tried finding my house, but the satellite imagery doesn't zoom in far enough in my area (the boonies just southwest of Houston, Texas).

Here's something very interesting and related to the OP. Apparently, some countries think terrorists will find their houses and target them.

Quote:

HYDERABAD, India - Indian President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam expressed concern Saturday about a free mapping program from Google Inc., warning it could help terrorists by providing satellite photos of potential targets.

Google Earth, an Internet site launched in June this year, allows users to access overlapping satellite photos. Although not all areas are highly detailed, some images are very high resolution, and some show sensitive locations in various countries.

At a meeting of top police officials in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad, Kalam said he worried that "developing countries, which are already in danger of terrorist attacks, have been singularly chosen" for providing high resolution images of their sites.

The governments of South Korea and Thailand and lawmakers in the Netherlands have expressed similar concerns.

South Korean newspapers said Google Earth provides images of the presidential Blue House and military bases in the country, which remains technically at war with communist
North Korea. The North's main nuclear facility at Yongbyon is among sites in that country displayed on the service.

The Google site contains clear aerial photos of India's parliament building, the president's house and surrounding government offices in New Delhi. There are also some clear shots of Indian defense establishments.

Officials at Mountain View, Calif.-based Google did not immediately return a phone call and e-mail seeking comment.

Responding in August to the concerns of two Dutch lawmakers, Google spokeswoman Catherine Betts noted the software uses information already available from public sources and said its benefits "far outweigh any negatives from potential abuse."

Kalam, a scientist who guided India's missile program before becaming president, called for new laws to restrain dissemination of such material. He said existing laws in some countries regarding spatial observations of their territory and the
United Nations' recommendations on the practice are inadequate.
