I think they look good at first, but then I'm always scared off by what the aging process and sunlight can do. I'd rather paint on myself with washable markers.
One of my friends and I went through a phase of using the temporary tattoos. Some of them look really cute when you put them on, but at the end of the evening I'd point out how cracked and ragged they looked and tell her, "see, that's how real one would look eventually."
Didn't help much; she ended up getting two real ones. One's a vine on her ear, neat looking but quite visible unless she makes an effort to cover it with her hair.
Never really liked the temporary ones for the reasons you stated. I used to literally draw on myself with markers, then powder it down with talcum powder. I had people with actual tatoos compliment me on my fake ones. At one point I had a strawberry vine on my foot, then a koi fish about a foot long on my thigh, and so on. It was easy to reach my legs so if I was wearing something with a slit, I'd draw it there. Nothing I drew ever lasted, though. No matter how great I thought it looked at first, it bored me pretty quick.
