All of these things are what make the "tramp stamp" such an effective locater, right? (Except the hepatitis.) Some guys find it unconciously (or conciously) sexy becasue they prey on the weakness they find. The one's that I've seen that I've liked accentuate the hips, usually tribals. Those are nice, but Goose, wtf was that bug thing?

In any case, I have a tat that I got back in college. We did it basically as a continuation of tradition and as part of somthing that I can only explain as a "right of initiation". The tats were done by profesionals. I think it was a great idea. It has become somthing of a touchstone and every time I see it I think about my some of my best friends and the best times of my life. When I don't freak out and think its a bug. It is on my right Ankle, above the sock line for crew socks. Easy to cover and even easy to forget about. Just a tiny reminder. Sophmores have been doing it for years, before and after us.

Yea, we may have been a wee bit brainwashed. And I'll admit it most certainly was monkey-see-monkey-do. (I got seamonkey and SeaDo out of that sentance, anyway...) We got the idea from the guys that went before us and passed it down to the classes after us.

It was a hell of a fun time though.

You got me. "Deep spiritual" is a bit smarmy but they do definitely have meaning. We'll go with the barcode since it has already been mentioned.

The barcode is basically about choice. On one hand it represents being a product of society and letting television, gov't, and other meaningless things define who we are. In short, teen angst. Although I am far passed being an angsty teenager those things still have merit. The numbers on the tattoo are the date that I quit destroying my life with drugs, booze, and crime. So the tattoo has dual meanings but the more important of the two is that we may be products of our society or environments but we do have the power to choose which parts to buy into and "be a product of". As someone who has come from some pretty dark places this message actaully does have "deep spiritual meaning" for me... and it is much better than tattooing "Quit your ******** and do something about it" on the back of my head.

Meh, its usually covered by my hair anyway... I'm too lazy to even keep up with that haircut.

I've seen your picture buddy. I can cover up my tattoos if I care to. You will always have to deal with your looks.

I'll second this motion.

I'd lump peirced tongues in with tattoos as a real "freshman year, look what me and my friend did because we were so drunk and crazy" kinda thing for girls. 90% of the time, that's actually the literal explanation for it. So yeah, my instinctive reaction "poor judgement".

For me, the best effect a girl's tattoo can have on me is nothing at all. I never, ever like them, but occasionally I don't particularly mind their presence. If they're done with some subtlety they're a little more bearable, but very outlandish tattoos, and ones that have childish or silly "meaning" to the owner are the worst.

But peircings to me can be the worst. Belly button ones I actually like, and a few additional ones in the ears can be fine as well. The nose I'm not a fan of, but as long as it's just a small stud, I'm ok with it. But tongue or god forbid - eyebrow or lip peircings can turn the most naturally attractive girl into someone I won't even consider.

...well, not sober anyway. Y'know.

I think it all goes down to the reason behind getting a particular tattoo versus the tattoo itself, looking at it from the "tattooed" point of view.

Getting it cause it's the "cool thing" to do is absolutly ridiculous, just as pretty much doing ANYTHING out of the sake of trend is stupid.

Friend of mine got a small tattoo a week or so after her dad passed away. Simple in design: "RIP, <name> <date>" in a single column, easily concealed.

Then again, I have another friend who think "it looks cool." Smiley: oyvey Little to no reasoning behind it, just the act of getting one just because, from what it seemed.

For the rest of us "tattoed people viewers", it all boils down to one simple decision: turn on, turn off, or indifferent.

Mark my words, if a chick has a butterfly tattoo she is a ****. It's a subconscious thing. A butterfly goes from flower to flower trying to get nectar and a chick with a butterfly tattoo....

In my youth I thought about getting a tat. Then I reconsidered. I thought about my grandmother who is 89 years old and actually has a tattoo on the inside of her forearm. It's a huge rose with her name on it. She is very embarressed by it now and in the heat of the summer will wear long sleeve shirts to cover it up. She said she got when she was young and foolish at the age of 18 (This seems to be the right of passage age even today).

I just imagine these women when they are 80 and have had a tattoo on their boob. That tattoo of moon and some stars now look like the whole freakin solar system. ewwwww, no thanks.

I can't ever remember seeing a tattoo look good on anyone over the age of 50. If it says anything to me it's a lack of planning and foresight.

You can't see the difference between an E and an N an I am the idiot? You lose. Thanks for playing.

Christ, I even mentioned my hair covering it up...

too many people get tats because they think its the ool thing to do. Its not the tats themselves but the reasons behiond the tats I think thats important. If ou're getting a lower back tat because everyone is doing it, then you're a tool and an unoriginal one at that. But if you actually have a connection to the symbol your tat represents I find it another story.

I myself have two tats and each have a special meaning for me. The first one I had a drawing done by a friend of mine and carried it around in my wallet for 5 years to ensure it was what I wanted. While now hwolly original it had great meaning to me in that time of my life. It's a bloody rose with a pool of blood below it. It was a symbolic representation of my look on my goals for life; beautiful, aheivable, but I would have to work hard in order to achieve them.

My second was a dragonfly, and I got it way before all the idiots started thinking butterflys and dragonflys were the cool thing to do. I was so pissed when I saw girls sporting them, thinking they were "cute". Again I thought long and hard before I got mine and again it represented what I strived for; grace, dignity, but underneath the small exterior was a focused, strong core, doing what it needs to survive. Call it cheesy if you will, but at that time in my life it was a good representation of who I was. I could have chosen another animal, but a dragonfly worked well and I've always had an affinity towards them.

Its whats behind the thought of the tat I think that matters most. I loathe it when people jump the gun and just get whatever they think is the up and coming trend. Body art is forever and I have a feeling there will be a ton of people in my age group at the retirement home bemoaning their youth for acting on a whim.

My GF has a Tat on her lower back, some odd design that's all the rage nowadays.

Low self esteem? Check

Hepatitis? Hope to hell not.

Weakness? Goes under Self esteem.

Reckless? Only in regads to the Tat.

Poor decision making? Duh.

Instability? Not really, only as much as a Typical 19 yr old.

I do think it was stupid of her to do, However I am shallow enough to admit I find it quite Hawt.

Dragonflys are okay, just watch out for those fu[/u]cking butterfly sluts.

I challenge all of you to find one girl with a butterfly tattoo that isn't some flimsy ***-bag. I've had this theory running for seven years and it has yet to fail me.

The truely original would have gone for a silverfish or a weevil or something.
