Spoilers ahoy...

So, the other day I'm at Hollywood Video and decide to rent some flick called "Employee of the Month". Starring Matt Dillon, Christina Applegate and some other feller I can't name. And some other blonde chick. Anyway, the box called compared it to to the Coen Brothers which is probably one of the more insulting things said about the Coen Brothers and that includes the reviews from that Clooney/Zeta-Jones vehicle. Besides being plodding and unamusing (I think there was one line that made me laugh), it contained one of the more annoying "we're so clever" devices I'm come across in cinema: the plot twist towards the end is explained via cut scenes during the credits that contain plot not shown during the course of the actual movie.

The other film that I immediately think of having done this was "Wild Things", the one with Neve Campbell and Denise Richards. However many minutes of telling the story one way then showing that you were wrong all along! And if you'd only known about this scene and this scene and this scene, you'd have known the *real* story! There's nothing clever about that. Hell, any idiot can come up with a story, throw in a seemingly random twist at the end and then retroactively explain it. The real trick is to give the viewer all the clues during the course of the story and see if you can mislead them in a way that makes them say "Ah! Of course!" in the last fifteen minutes.

Oh, and everyone dies in the end in the most predictable manners possible. I warned you there were spoilers.

Employee of the Month was terrible. I was fooled by the promising-looking box as well.

The first 99% of the movie was standardly mediocre, but the end was so stupid I got angry (and remember that my rentals are free). Totally hackneyed and unnecessary.

Thats right, you work at blockbuster.

I used to waste all of my free rentals there too. Blown on stupid crap or video games that I'd have no time to play.

I remember watchinig "Wild Things" and saying "If lesbianism is really like this, yeah, I'm down." However, I said that out loud and not in my mind and since then, hubby's been dropping some serious hints.

I mostly remember the ending being shitty. Then again, I refuse to watch "Cruel Intentions" because that movie sucked *** as well.

Really, if I want to see ****, I'll watch ****. Kissing girls alone isn't enough to redeem a sh
itty movie in my eyes.

On the Coen Brothers note, I just watched Barton Fink. I liked most of it, but the ending became too David Lynch-ish, and I hate David Lynch. I'm sure someone could explain the metaphors to me, cause I really don't know what I was supposed to take away from it.

1) Will it redeem ****** ****?

2) What if they'll kiss in your lap if you promise to like the movie?

I might rent that if I can find it. The local Hollywood has a unique system of classifying films which seems to involve a dartboard, a monkey and some weighted dice. It's probably under "Special Interests" or "Children".

Barton Fink is the only CB movie I really don't like. Actually, did they do The Hudsucker Proxy or was that someone else? I didn't like that either. I'm thinking I might need to give Barton Fink a second chance though.

Hudsucker Proxy was the Coens. One of my favorites.

Yeah, Barton Fink went a little off the deep end there.

I agree Joph, you can't base a crappy movie off of a random twist...especially when it's only shown during the credits? Lame.

That movie pissed me off too. I had high hopes going in because of the Coen brothers reference, liking Matt Dillon, and liking con/heist movies. This one was a real piece of shit though.

Now David Fincher "twists" those are the good ones.
