I think it started out as a joke because the search feature is/was broken, so user names couldn't be searched directly. You'd have to be mentioned by name in a post for your name to come up in a search.

Mostly the egomaniacs of the forum care, for the reason implied.
I don' think I can be searched as only three letters aren't searchable if I remember correctly. Unless someone was talking to me formally.
5,658 for Joph* not counting various Iofiels, Jofiels, Jo's and other assorted unsearchables 'cause I'm too lazy. We'll call it an even 5,700.
